Prof. Dr. Lisa Sauermann (Uni Bonn) gab Anfang Juli im Schloss in Münster eine anschauliche Einführung in die Kombinatorik, ein Teilgebiet der Mathematik, das sich mit sogenannten diskreten Strukturen beschäftigt. Die Videoaufzeichnung des Vortrags ist nun für alle Interessierten auf dem YouTube-Kanal unseres Exzellenzclusters verfügbar.

Um besonders begabten Schülerinnen und Schülern Einblicke in Studium und Forschung zu geben, ist die Universität Münster seit 2022 fester Kooperationspartner der NRW-Schülerakademie Mathematik und Informatik (SMIMS). Am Dienstag besuchten die jungen Mathe-Talente unseren Fachbereich und unseren Exzellenzcluster, um Schnuppervorlesungen zu hören und sich individuell zu Studiengängen und Wissenschaftskarrieren beraten zu lassen.

Wir haben zwei aktuelle und zwei ehemalige MATHRIX-Juniorprofessorinnen nach den Höhepunkten und Chancen gefragt, die ihnen das Programm geboten hat. Kristin Gabe, Anna Gusakova, Franziska Jahnke und Aleksandra Kwiatkowska teilen ihre Erfahrungen.

Prof. Dr. Hendrik Weber, Investigator von Mathematics Münster, verbringt derzeit einen durch den Clay Senior Scholar Award geförderten Forschungsaufenthalt am Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) in Berkeley, USA. Im Rahmen des Einführungsworkshops "Kinetic Theory & Stochastic Partial Differential Equations" hat er einen Minikurs zu "Stochastic PDEs and Scaling Limits" gehalten. Die Videoaufzeichnungen sind nun verfügbar.

Prof. Dr. Shirly Geffen arbeitet im Bereich der Operatoralgebren, insbesondere mit C*-Algebren. Seit 2024 hat sie eine permanente Professur an der Universität Münster inne. In diesem Interview erzählt sie, wie sie ihr Forschungsfeld entdeckt hat, wie ihr akademischer Weg sie von Israel nach Münster zu einer MATHRIX-Juniorprofessur geführt hat und was sie an der Mathematik besonders schön findet.

The purpose of the meeting is to study relationships between local and global invariants in Riemannian Geometry. Our intention is to bring together experts in the field as well as young mathematicians.

Wir laden zur Bewerbung für zwei MATHRIX-Juniorprofessuren im Fach Mathematik ein, Deadline 30. September 2025. Eine der Stellen wird im Bereich der theoretischen Mathematik und die andere im Bereich der angewandten Mathematik verortet sein. Beide Positionen haben eine Laufzeit von jeweils 3+3 Jahren und sind mit einem attraktiven Startpaket ausgestattet.

This is a joint seminar of research groups from Bielefeld and Münster. It started in 2015 and usually takes place once every semester, either in Bielefeld or in Münster. The topics of interest include group theory, geometry and topology. Everyone is welcome to participate in the lectures.

Dr. Maxime Ramzi and Prof. Dr. Thomas Nikolaus will give a talk "Euler characteristics, algebraic K-Theory and the Farrell-Jones conjecture" at the CRC Colloquium on 15 July 2025. The talk takes place at 4 pm in lecture hall M2. An informal reception will follow in the Cluster Common Room.

Wir freuen uns, Dr. Amra Hasečić als WiRe-Fellow am Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster begrüßen zu dürfen. Sie kommt ursprünglich aus Bosnien und Herzegowina und hat sich der Arbeitsgruppe von Mario Ohlberger als Postdoktorandin angeschlossen. Ihre Forschung konzentriert sich darauf, das Potenzial des maschinellen Lernens zur Vorhersage von Temperaturfeldern in Strömungen zu untersuchen, indem sie Daten aus vereinfachten Simulationen nutzt, die keine Strahlung berücksichtigen.

Am Freitag, 11. Juli 2025, ging es beim Wissenschaftsfestival "SchlauRaum"um Mathematik: "Wir folgen dem kleinen Medicus durch den Körper – mit mathematisch-medizinischer Bildgebung!" war der Titel des Vortrags von Prof. Dr. Benedikt Wirth von unserem Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster, dem viele interessierte Zuhörer:innen im Open-Air-Hörsaal in der Stubengasse folgten.
 

Die Forschung am neuen "Interdisziplinäre Zentrum für mathematische Modellierung der Dynamik von Infektionskrankheiten" (IMMIDD), das am 10. Juli seinen Auftakt an der Universität Münster gefeiert hat, soll dazu beitragen, Pandemien zu bekämpfen. Prof. Dr. Christian Engwer, Mitglied unseres Exzellenzclusters Mathematik Münster, ist an dem Forschungsverbund beteiligt. In einem Gastbeitrag schildert er, welche Rolle numerische Simulationen dabei spielen.

Vergangene Woche fand im Schloss die feierliche Promotionsfeier des Fachbereichs Mathematik und Informatik statt. Alle Promovierten, die im zurückliegenden Jahr ihre Promotion erfolgreich abgeschlossen haben, sowie ihre Familie und Freunde waren dazu eingeladen. Wir gratulieren allen Absolventen, besonders den 25 Promovierten von Mathematics Münster.

The second poster session of our Mathematics Münster Graduate School (MMGS) took place on 2 July. The very well attended event started with short presentations at the "Poster Blitz". Afterwards, the speakers gave detailed information about their research projects in the Cluster Lounge.

The two YAM Fellows for 2024/2025, Herimamy T. Rafenomanantsoa and Joseline Doriane Simo Tekeu, will present the research they have been conducting during their year at Mathematics Münster. At the end of the event, certificates for successfully completing the Young African Mathematicians Fellowship will be awarded.

Am 27. Juni 2025 stellten die beiden Absolventinnen des Young African Mathematicians (YAM) Fellowship Programme, Herimamy T. Rafenomanantsoa und Joseline Doriane Simo Tekeu, die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungsprojekte vor.

Our summer school in stochastic analysis will feature lectures by leading experts in the field. The programme will cover modern aspects of stochastic analysis, pertaining to the long-time analysis of dynamical systems. Topics of interest will include, e.g., interacting particle systems and scaling limits. The school is designed for young researchers, offering an opportunity to interact with other researchers and young mathematicians in the field.

Beim "Zukunftsmarkt " an Bord des Ausstellungsschiffs "MS Wissenschaft" stellten gestern Prof. Dr. Mario Ohlberger und Dr. Hendrik Kleikamp, Forscher unseres Exzellenzclusters, neue mathematische Methoden vor, um Prozesse in Batterien am Computer zu untersuchen und zu optimieren. An einer interaktiven Station konnten Interessierte selbst mit den mathematischen Methoden experimentieren.

This is the forth in the series of workshops that institutionalize the tradition of the BOS-Workshops on stochastic geometry. The intention of this series is that researchers from the Westphalian Polygon of Locations (Bielefeld-Osnabrück-Münster-Bochum-Dortmund) meet once per semester to discuss their ongoing SPP 2265 research projects in an informal atmosphere and jointly develop new research ideas.

Große Freude bei "Mathematics Münster": Am heutigen Donnerstag (22. Mai) gaben die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) und der Wissenschaftsrat (WR) bekannt, dass der Exzellenzcluster "Mathematik Münster: Dynamik – Geometrie – Struktur" ab dem 1. Januar 2026 für weitere sieben Jahre gefördert wird. Damit gehört der Cluster zu 70 Forschungsverbünden an deutschen Hochschulen, die in der "ersten Förderlinie" der Exzellenzstrategie gefördert werden. Sie setzten sich im Wettbewerb mit insgesamt 98 Anträgen durch.

Prof. Dr. Ralf Schindler und Prof. Dr. Dr. Katrin Tent, Mitglieder des Exzellenzclusters Mathematik Münster, sind unabhängig voneinander eingeladen worden, ihre Forschung auf dem renommierten International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) zu präsentieren, der im Juli 2026 in Philadelphia stattfindet. In kurzen Interviews erfahren Sie, was die Einladung zum ICM für die beiden Forschenden bedeutet und bekommen einen Einblick in die Forschungsfelder sowie die Themen der ICM-Vorträge. [en]

We are pleased that Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Werner (Case Western Reserve University) has joined our Cluster as a new Münster Research Fellow. She is a world-leading expert in convex geometry, functional analysis, and probability theory. During her stay until mid-August, she will intensify her collaborations with Anna Gusakova.

Die Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste (AWK) hat Prof. Dr. Eva Viehmann von unserem Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster als neues Mitglied aufgenommen. Bei der Jahresfeier der Akademie am 14. Mai begrüßte das AWK-Präsidium insgesamt zwölf neue Mitglieder, die durch ihre Expertise und Forschung herausragen. Eva Viehmann wurde in die Klasse für Naturwissenschaften und Medizin aufgenommen.

In his talk "The Art and Mathematics of Curved Origami" on 15 May, Prof. Dr. Jun Mitani (University of Tsukuba) introduced his work on curved folding, including artistic examples and design methods. It also touched on origami's cultural and engineering aspects, and concluded with a hands-on curved folding workshop.

We are celebrating women and gender diversity in mathematics with several events throughout the week from 12-16 May 2025 in the context of "May12 initiative", the International Women in Maths Day. Check the programme and join in!

Vertreter:innen deutscher Universitäten und Institutionen werden mit der DFG drängende Fragen der Forschung und Lehre in der angewandten Mathematik diskutieren.

This spring school is devoted to several topics in probability theory, like point processes, interacting particle systems, random graphs and stochastic geometry, related by the common theme "Random Discrete Structures". The schedule will consist of three mini-courses as well as the number of short talks. We stress that attendance is of course open to everyone.

We are happy to welcome Prof. Dr. Astrid an Huef (Victoria University of Wellington) to our Cluster. An Huef is a functional analyst who specialises in operator algebras that impinge on other areas of modern mathematics such as dynamics, graph theory, number theory and harmonic analysis. During her stay at Mathematics Münster until mid-June, she will intensify her collaborations with Wilhelm Winter.

Both, non-reciprocity and mass conservation, have far reaching generic consequences for the universal dynamical behaviour of the concerned wide range of non-equilibrium systems. Results of many particular approaches to the mathematical modelling of such systems have shown that classical concepts of nonlinear and statistical physics, such as phase transitions, need to be reconsidered and developed further.

This is a series of meetings, with the aim of bringing together the geometric group theorists, topologists, and geometers in the North-Rhine Westphalia region of Germany.

Prof. Dr. Katharina Hübner (Goethe Universität Frankfurt) will give a talk on "Paths in nonarchimedean spaces" at the Colloquium Wilhelm Killing on 24 April 2025. The talk takes place at 2:15 pm in lecture hall M4.

Get an insight into the research of six new postdoctoral researchers of Mathematics Münster. In short scientific presentations Gayrat Toshpulatov, Dario Reggiani, Francesco Deangelis, Floris Vermeulen, Ioannis Zachos and Sam Shepherd will introduce their topics. This workshop on Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDE) aims to provide an intensive series of lectures delivered by leading researchers in the field. Over the course of a week, young researchers will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of SPDE and foster scientific exchange. The goal is to stimulate collaboration and advance knowledge among junior researchers through expert-led sessions and interactive discussions.

Ob bei der Steuerung von Schadenregulierung, in der IT-Sicherheit oder bei Prognosen zum Kundenstamm – mit Mathematik lassen sich viele Fragen der Wirtschaft lösen. Praktische Beispiele lieferte in der vergangenen Woche die Veranstaltung „Mathematics meets Business“, organisiert von unserem Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster und der Industrie- und Handelskammer (IHK) Nord Westfalen. Nachwuchsforschende aus der MMGS kamen mit Wirtschaftsvertreterinnen und -vertretern aus der Region zusammen, um praktische Lösungen für ganz konkrete Herausforderungen zu entwickeln.

In the second episode of Postdoc Paper Talk, Dr. Ksenia Fedosova discusses her recently published paper "Convolution identities for divisor sums and modular forms" in PNAS with Prof. Dr. Christopher Deninger. Ksenia Fedosova works at the intersection of global analysis, number theory, and mathematical physics.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster invite applications for a Professorship (W3 level) in Pure Mathematics, Bridging the Gaps Chair. We are seeking a mathematician with an exceptional international research profile whose work bridges different areas of mathematics and aligns with the research objectives of Mathematics Münster. Application deadline: 30 April 2025.

We welcome Dr. Peter Morfe as a new Young Research Fellow at our Cluster. He is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig and an expert in the theory of homogenisation of elliptic and parabolic differential operators, including operators with random coefficients. During his stay until the end of February, he will collaborate with Guilherme De Lima Feltes and Hendrik Weber.

We welcome Prof. Dr. Alcides Buss (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brazil) as a Münster Research Fellow. He is a distinguished researcher in the field of Operator Algebras. During his stay at our Cluster in February 2025, he will intensify his collaboration with the Operator Algebra group and many other researchers from Mathematics Münster.

Model Theory meets GGT is a week-long conference aimed at bringing together young researchers in the areas of Model Theory and Geometric Group Theory. These two areas exhibit a rich interplay, and the mini-courses and research talks will be aimed to display topics in this intersection. Furthermore, there will be a lightning talks session in which all participants are encouraged to give a brief introduction to their own research and interests, so as to foster even more interaction between the participants.

Als Henriette-Herz-Scout kann Prof. Dr. Franziska Jahnke, Postdocs aus dem Ausland für ein Humboldt-Forschungsstipendium vorschlagen. Nun hat die Forscherin des Exzellenzclusters Mathematik Münster diese Möglichkeit genutzt, um Dr. Mariana Vicaria und Dr. Floris Vermeulen nach Münster zu holen. Im Interview erzählen sie, aus welchen Gründen sie sich für Münster entschieden haben, an welchen Projekten sie forschen und wie ihr Start verlaufen ist. [en]

The workshop is aimed at algebraic and arithmetic geometers curious about the potential application of model theory in their research, as well as at model theorists who are keen to learn how their tools may be extended to answer questions of geometric interest.

We welcome Dr. Radhika Gupta as a new Young Research Fellow at our Cluster. She is a Reader at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Her work is mostly in geometric group theory, where she made important contributions on the geometry of CAT(0) groups and free-by-cyclic groups. During her stay until mid February, she will work on this topic with Benjamin Brück and Katrin Tent, but she is always open for mathematical exchange on various topics.

For his contribution to the research programme "Recent Trends in Stochastic Partial Differential Equations", Prof. Dr. Hendrik Weber, investigator at Mathematics Münster, has been awarded a Clay Senior Scholar Award by the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath, formerly MSRI).

Prof. Dr. Jörg Schürmann, Prof. Dr. Raimar Wulkenhaar and Dr. Yifei Zhao will give a talk on "Moduli spaces of curves and mathematical physics" at the CRC Colloquium on 10 January 2025. The talk takes place at 3:15 pm in lecture hall M3.
