I have not yet completed my Master's degree, can I still apply for a PhD position?
Yes, it is not necessary to have a completed degree at the time of application. However, you must complete your degree before the starting date of the position.

How can I demonstrate proficiency in English?
You can provide a proof of proficiency either by an official language certificate or by transcripts. If the language of instruction during your studies was English or you attended courses taught in English (as stated on the transcript of records) we accept this as proof of proficiency.
Also, if you have had English in school for several years, we accept this as a proof of proficiency as well.

    Selection
Selection of applicants is done by a selection committee, consisting of nine professors representing all mathematical areas at Mathematics Münster. Investigators of Mathematics Münster are consulted in an advisory capacity. The main criterion for selection is academic excellence.

Will I get informed about the decision of the selection committee?
All applicants will receive a message regarding the outcome of the selection.
Please note that the selection process takes time.

We will start on your employment contract at least 8 weeks before the agreed starting day.

    Hiring Process

    Employment contracts
We offer fully-funded positions for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, meaning that you will receive an employment contract by the university as a scientific employee (in German: Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in).

For doctoral candidates: For the administrative part of the hiring process, you need to hand in your Master's degree certificate or a certificate that you have successfully completed all Master's courses.
For postdoctoral candidates: For the administrative part of the hiring process, you need to hand in your doctoral certificate at least 3 weeks before the starting day.

To ensure that you can start your contract, make sure that you have the documents available on time.

Do I need a residence permit?
If you are a non-EU citizen, you will need a visa to enter and/or work in Germany. Once you arrived in Germany, you will in most cases need to have the visa transformed into a residence permit. Please note that among other documents, you will need to provide a copy of your degree certificate(s) for the residence permit.
