Programmes and funding opportunities

At Mathematics Münster research is regarded as a cohesive whole, with numerous connections between different mathematical disciplines. By developing mathematical methods through this integrated, cross‑disciplinary approach we generate substantial innovation that reaches beyond mathematics.
The three guiding principles Dynamics – Geometry – Structure unite the work of more than 200 researchers who study how objects evolve dynamically, view them from a geometric perspective, and uncover the deeper structures underlying specific scientific problems.

Our programmes, measures, and initiatives are deliberately designed towards implementing fully integrated approaches across mathematical fields (see objectives).
Mathematics Münster provides funding and opportunities that bridge mathematical fields — from bridging‑research positions and exchange platforms to sabbatical programmes. The early‑career (ECR) programmes aim to attract top talent with their own research proposals, create a setting for network‑building, spark collaborations, and foster confident scientific communication. They also encourage senior researchers to collaborate more closely through the shared perspective of an ECR.
All activities value diverse expertise, backgrounds, and perspectives. Through hiring schemes and fellowships we work toward broadening the diversity of mathematicians contributing to our research programme.
The success of this supportive ecosystem is an exceptional stepping‑stone for early‑career researchers (see career advancement).

    • An MM Chair will be established open to all mathematical fields that supports our research objectives and contributes to gender equality at MM.
  • Research at MM: Collaborative mathematics and early independence

    • A wide range of talks, lectures, and seminars with international and local researchers is hosted at MM.
      See what's going on
    • Mobility funds are available for members to engage in international collaborations, attend conferences or summer schools.
    • MM advances cutting-edge research by implementing integrated approaches to solve fundamental problems across various mathematical disciplines.
      Explore the research programme.
    • MM hosts plenty of scientific events, i.e. conferences and workshops, also within the Young Mathematician Conference Network, or as a focused series in our Focus Programme bridging mathematical fields.
    • To connect different mathematical fields, postdocs are hired into two different working groups. This Bridging Programme encourages investigators to communicate and collaborate more closely through the shared perspective of an ECR.
    • The Start-up Funds for Emerging Project Programme supports high-potential projects such as ERC proposals of members of Mathematics Münster.
    • Additional teaching exemptions for a research semester in Münster to focus on a joint project with a colleague from Münster or a long-term visiting fellow from abroad can be realised through the MM Sabbaticals Programme.
    • MM believes that innovation is sparked by collaboration. Our Common Room is intentionally designed as a central workspace, equipped with expansive blackboards. This shared space connects researchers across all mathematical fields and career stages.

Career Advancements

MM offers extensive resources and structured opportunities that accelerate professional growth and expand scientific networks. The mentoring programme for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers provides an additional source of advice by an experienced researcher from another mathematical field and actively foster scientific independence.

Events beyond maths complement the mathematical education and broaden the horizon.

Removing Barriers

We are committed to equity and diversity. We welcome people of all backgrounds and identities and by removing barriers we foster a research community that is diverse, inclusive and free from discrimination, where everyone can thrive.

Mathematics meets Business is an event series, which brings scientists together with leading technology companies in the Münsterland region.

Fireside Chats open up perspectives and look beyond the horizon of academic research in mathematics. Individuals with a doctorate in mathematics who subsequently pursued an exciting career outside academia are given a voice.

The MaIn Perspectives event series gives bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral candidates ideas about projects and work-styles in industry and companies.
