MATHRIX Assistant Professorship Programme

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science has set up the MATHRIX Assistant Professorship Programme to support gender equality in the mathematical sciences. For that purpose, six assistant professorships in Mathematics have been established, with regular calls for applications.

Meet the current and former MATHRIX assistant professors

Who can apply?

Applicants must have a strong research record in mathematics and appropriate teaching experience. Applications are particularly welcome if they strengthen, complement and/or connect existing research topics of the Cluster.

What is funded?

Six assistant professorships (Juniorprofessuren, W1-salary level) have been established. The professorships run for three years with an extension for another three years upon positive evaluation. Each position comes with an attractive start-up package.

How to apply?

Calls for applications for the MATHRIX assistant professor programme are published on our website under Calls and on the job platforms of the EMS and the AMS (mathjobs.org).

Closed Call 2025 - MATHRIX Professorship

The Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster: Dynamics – Geometry – Structure at the University of Münster invites applications for two

    MATHRIX Assistant Professorships in Mathematics
    salary level W1

One of the positions will be filled in an area of theoretical, and one in an area of applied mathematics. The professorships are for three years with the possibility of an extension for another three years upon positive evaluation.

Applications are particularly welcome if they strengthen, complement and/or connect existing research topics of the Cluster. Successful candidates should contribute to existing and/or future third-party funded grants.

The professorships should contribute to gender equality within the mathematical sciences, which might for example be documented by an appropriate gender equality concept.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in mathematics or in a nearby discipline. They should demonstrate a strong research record and appropriate teaching experience.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions.

We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.

Applications, including a cover letter, CV, list of publications, research plan relating to the research of Mathematics Münster, and teaching portfolio, should be submitted electronically, as a single PDF file, by 30 September 2025 to mathdek@uni-muenster.de.

"Coming to Münster was one of the most significant turning points in my academic career"

Interview with Shirly Geffen

Prof. Dr. Shirly Geffen, investigator of Mathematics Münster, works in the field of operator algebras, and more specifically, C*-algebras. Since 2024, she has held a permanent professorship at the University of Münster. In this interview, she shares how she discovered her research field, how her academic path led her from Israel to a MATHRIX assistant professorship in Münster, and what she finds particularly beautiful about mathematics.

Kristin (Courtney) Gabe awarded Inge Lehmann Grant

Kristin (Courtney) Gabe has received the highly esteemed Inge Lehmann grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The grant recognizes her advanced research in the field of operator algebras, a branch of theoretical mathematics with strong ties to quantum physics. Kristin Gabe is an external investigator of Mathematics Münster and a former MATHRIX professor. Since 2023, she has held an assistant professorship at the University of Southern Denmark.

Humboldt Foundation accepts Franziska Jahnke as a Henriette Herz Scout

We are delighted that the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has accepted Franziska Jahnke, MATHRIX professor at Mathematics Münster, as a new Henriette Herz Scout. She has now the opportunity to recommend three postdocs from abroad for a renowned Humboldt Research Fellowship which can be granted directly.

In a new series of videos, the Communication and Public Relations department of the University of Münster presents six academics from a variety of disciplines who are either junior professors or who head a group of junior researchers. A video portrait of out investigator Dr. Theresa Simon was recently published. As a junior professor at the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster, she studies patterns in magnets.

MATHRIX Professorship: an important step in an academic career

Assistant professor Dr. Mira Schedensack held the MATHRIX Professorship until 2019 and, looking back, she says, “The MATHRIX Professorship enabled me, for the first time, to carry out research really independently.”

"Moments of true insight make all the apparently fruitless hours worthwhile"

Münster mathematicians Dr. Franziska Jahnke and Dr. Mira Schedensack talk about their work

Hours of contemplation, approaching a solution in small steps, and a healthy scepticism towards computer-generated results. In these guest articles, two mathematicians at the University of Münster, Dr. Franziska Jahnke und Dr. Mira Schedensack, explain what mathematical research means to them and what the aim of this research is. Both undertake research and teaching at the University of Münster within the framework of the MATHRIX junior professorships, which were established in 2017 to promote gender equality in mathematics.
