Equity and Diversity

Mathematics Münster is a hub for all researchers – united by their passion for mathematics.

We welcome people of all genders, cultural or religious backgrounds or world views, social backgrounds, mental or physical abilities, sexual orientations, ages, ethnicities, nationalities or other aspects of diversity.

Our vision is a research community in which diversity is appreciated and in which interaction, communication, and processes are non-discriminatory in every aspect. Celebrating diversity and removing barriers allows us all to thrive and successfully collaborate.

Equal opportunity on all levels

We support under-represented groups and aim to increase gender equity on all levels, e.g. through established programmes such as the MATHRIX Professorship, the Ada Lovelace Fellowships for excellent doctoral researchers, and the MINT Mentoring Programme for talented women in mathematics pursuing a master's degree.

  • Master's candidates

MINT Mentoring Programme for Master's Students

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a mentoring group to all women working on their master's thesis in mathematics or computer science. A mentoring group consists of a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher as a mentor and three students as mentees. In group or individual meetings, mentees learn from the mentor's experiences. In particular, the mentees are supported in writing their master's thesis, in career planning and in developing skills and competencies.

Young African Mathematicians Fellowship Programme (YAM)

Through this initiative, young, talented and highly motivated graduates of the AIMS Master Programme receive a fellowship for a 10-month research stay at Mathematics Münster to gain experience in a new research environment.

  • Doctoral researchers

We encourage women to pursue a doctorate in mathematics. From the application process onwards we support our doctoral researchers: Starting with an awareness of the “quota” of applicants and open positions, and later on, with workshops and mentoring.

Ada Lovelace Fellowships for doctoral researchers

The goal of the Ada Lovelace Fellowship is to increase gender diversity in mathematics. It is awarded to excellent women on the PhD level and includes a 25 % supplementary position. The selection of the fellows by the AfWiN (Committee on Research and Young Scientists) is based on the academic performance and grades which have already been achieved in the bachelor's and master's studies.

Diversity Support Programme for doctoral researchers

With the Diversity Support Programme Mathematics Münster supports uunder-representedgroups and wants to promote diversity in mathematics. Mathematics Münster offers financial support to individuals disadvantaged under an aspect of diversity on a case-by-case basis.

  • Postdocs

We encourage women to pursue an academic career in mathematics. From the application process onwards, we support our postdocs: Starting with an awareness of the "quota" of applicants and open positions, and later on, with workshops and mentoring.

  • Professors

We actively encourage women to apply for open professorship positions at Mathematics Münster.

With our MATHRIX Assistant Professor Programme, we attract postdocs early in their academic careers.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science has set up the MATHRIX Assistant Professor Programme to promote gender equality in the mathematical sciences. We created six assistant professorships (Juniorprofessuren) equipped with an attractive start-up package.

MATHRIX Assistant Professor Programme

The MATHRIX Assistant Professor Programme has been set up to support gender equality in the mathematical sciences. For that purpose, six assistant professor positions (Juniorprofessuren) equipped with an attractive start-up package were established. The positions run for 3+3 years.

Events and Seminars

We offer seminars and events with women in focus targeted at a broad audience or targeted especially at women.
For the annual International Women in Maths Day, we implement various events. At the Ada Lovelace Seminar, our fellows have the opportunity to present their research topic to the whole department. Regularly, networking events, like the "Stammtisch", and training courses are offered to women, e.g. on leadership, communication and presentation skills.

Family or and Career ?!

Enhancing the compatibility of academic work and family life, providing structural and financial support that eases the career-family balance for researchers is one of the goals of Mathematics Münster and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

May 12 - International "Women in Maths" Day

Around May 12th, the international "Women in Maths" day, we celebrate women and gender diversity in mathematics with a week-long programme. This includes, for example, talks by experienced scientists for early-career researchers, networking events, skill trainings, and joint screenings of films about inspiring mathematicians.

Girls' Day

Every year, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and Mathematics Münster take part in the nationwide day of action. Pupils are given an insight into the process of studying mathematics and learn about the career prospects it opens up.

Neurodiversity and mental health

Neurodiversity

At Mathematics Münster we recognise that cognitive diversity enriches research and innovation. Our policies and practices are deliberately designed to create an inclusive environment that supports neuro‑divergent researchers, thereby enhancing wellbeing, collaboration and productivity.

Mental Health

We recognise that supporting researchers’ mental well‑being is essential for a thriving scientific community. Mathematics Münster therefore offers confidential counselling, peer‑support networks, and flexible work‑arrangements to help anyone who needs assistance, fostering a resilient and caring environment for all.

Conflict resolution

The Cluster has a zero tolerance limit for discrimination, harassment, bullying and other behavioural violations. Affected persons can contact the cluster management team and the spokespersons confidentially at any time. Together we will try to find a solution and point out possible courses of action!
