Doctoral Positions

Kickstart your scientific journey at the Mathematics Münster Graduate School and dive into your own research project, supported and inspired by our active community.

  • Employment contract as a doctoral research associate at salary level E13 TV‐L, 75% (FTE) for three years.
  • In all  research fields related to Mathematics Münster.
  • Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), either through the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster, the Research Training Group "Rigorous Analysis of Complex Random Systems", or the University of Münster’s mathematical institutes, for example, the Chair for Applied Analysis.

Ada Lovelace Fellowships (add-on positions)

Supplement your doctoral position with the Ada Lovelace Fellowship and contribute to gender diversity in mathematics.

  • Fellowships include a 25% TV-L E13 add-on position (salary raise).
  • Fellowships must complement a doctoral position and may be combined with an application for a doctoral position at Mathematics Münster. Doctoral researchers accepted at Mathematics Münster (including those funded by scholarships) since the previous call for Ada Lovelace Fellowships are also eligible to apply.

  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    I have not yet completed my Master's degree, can I still apply for a doctoral position?
    Yes, it is not necessary to have a completed degree at the time of application. However, you must complete your degree before the starting date of the position.

    How can I demonstrate proficiency in English?
    You can provide proof of proficiency either by an official language certificate or by transcripts. If the language of instruction during your studies was English or you attended courses taught in English (as stated on the transcript of records), we accept this as proof of proficiency.
    Also, if you have had English in school for several years, we accept this as proof of proficiency as well.

    When will I be informed of the selection committee’s decision?
    All applicants will receive a message regarding the outcome of the selection.
    Please note that the selection process takes time.

    What do I do when I have received an offer? 
    Offers will be made via email. Please confirm that you have received the offer as soon as possible. Once you have decided to accept the offered position, our management office will contact you with information regarding the hiring process. We will start on your employment contract at least 8 weeks before the agreed starting day.

    When can I start my position?
    The starting date is negotiable. As a general rule, the position should be started within one year.

  • Information for referees

    If possible, we kindly ask you to consider the following questions/points in your letter:

    • Since when and in which capacity have you known the applicant?
    • Please assess the applicant’s intellectual and analytic strength, their mathematical knowledge, their technical mathematical skills, their ambition, and their independence.
    • Please describe the applicant’s attitude towards academic work, their reliability, and their ability for teamwork.
    • Please comment on the applicant’s proficiency in English.
    • Would you accept this applicant as a postdoctoral/doctoral researcher at your own institution?
