My Erasmus Experience: Everyday Life at imec in VUB Brussels and imec Headquarters Leuven

A Day in the Life at Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (imec), Belgium

Embarking on my Erasmus internship with imec has been nothing short of transformative. imec, a globally renowned research hub, combines innovation, collaboration, and cutting-edge technology in ways that have deeply inspired me. My work spans two dynamic locations: VUB Brussels and imec’s headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. Each day offers a blend of technical challenges, teamwork, and cultural immersion that make this journey unforgettable.

Mornings: Diving into Innovation

My mornings often begin early, especially on days when I commute to Leuven. I’ve grown fond of Belgium’s efficient public transport system, which ensures a smooth start to the day. Walking into imec, whether at VUB Brussels or Leuven, is always energizing. The buzz of researchers, engineers, and students working together in a high-tech environment sets the tone for a productive day.

At VUB Brussels, my mornings are centered around 2.5D microstructures for MicroLED metrology and holography applications. This involves meticulous tasks such as spin-coating and photolithography, as well as analyzing results to optimize fabrication processes. The hands-on experience is both challenging and rewarding, requiring precision and creative problem-solving.

When in Leuven, my focus shifts to broader discussions about scalable fabrication techniques and their integration into practical applications. The headquarters, with its state-of-the-art facilities, fosters a sense of awe and motivation.

Afternoons: Collaboration and Progress

Afternoons are often dedicated to collaborative efforts. At VUB Brussel, I work closely with fellow interns and researchers to refine experimental techniques and interpret findings. It’s a supportive environment where ideas flow freely, and everyone is committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation.

At imec Leuven, afternoons sometimes involve attending team meetings or seminars. These sessions provide valuable insights into ongoing projects across imec and highlight the interdisciplinary nature of our work. I’ve had the chance to engage with experts in various fields, deepening my understanding of materials science and nanoengineering.

Memorable Events: VUB Staff’s End-of-Year Party and imec Open Minds Birthday Edition

One of the highlights of my Erasmus experience has been the vibrant community life at both imec locations. In December, I attended the VUB Staff’s End-of-Year Party, a joyous celebration filled with laughter, delicious Belgian cuisine, and heartwarming conversations. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with colleagues and immerse myself in the welcoming culture of VUB.

Another unforgettable event was the imec Open Minds Birthday Edition Party held on 12th December 2024. This celebration brought together researchers, staff, and collaborators in a festive atmosphere. From live music to interactive science exhibits showcasing imec’s groundbreaking projects, the event was a perfect blend of fun and inspiration. It reinforced the sense of belonging to a forward-thinking community dedicated to shaping the future.

Evening Wrap-Up: A Time to Reflect

As the day winds down, I dedicate time to documenting my experiments, analyzing results, and planning next steps. imec often organizes evening seminars and workshops, which I find immensely enriching. These sessions provide a glimpse into cutting-edge research and foster discussions about emerging trends in materials science.

When not working late, I explore the vibrant cities of Brussels and Leuven. Brussels enchants with its historic architecture, bustling markets, and culinary delights, while Leuven charms with its cobblestone streets, lively student community, and picturesque parks.

Weekends: Exploring Belgium and Beyond

Weekends are a chance to recharge and explore. From visiting iconic landmarks like the Atomium in Brussels to enjoying Leuven’s vibrant cultural scene, Belgium offers a wealth of experiences. On some weekends, I’ve ventured beyond Belgium to nearby countries, taking advantage of Europe’s well-connected transport network.

Reflection: A Life-Changing Journey

My time at imec has been more than an academic pursuit; it has been a journey of personal and professional growth. Working on cutting-edge research in a collaborative, multicultural environment has prepared me for future challenges in materials science and nanoengineering.

The events, friendships, and discoveries I’ve made during this Erasmus experience have left an indelible mark on me. I encourage anyone considering an Erasmus internship to embrace the opportunity—it’s a chance to learn, grow, and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in science and technology.
