Start of registration for software training courses

With a range of classroom, Zoom and Learnweb courses, software courses of the CIT are offered again. From Thursday, 25.04.2024, at 5 pm students of University of Münster can register for the free trainings. The range of topics includes office, graphics and statistics programmes.
The dates take place from April to June.

Working Group "Research Software Engineering" meets on 17.01.

Research software engineering can enormously enrich research in the processing, simulation, modeling, evaluation and communication of data. Therefore, CIT and IVV 4 invite you to an exchange about the latest developments, current topics, projects and much more within the framework of the RSE working group on January 17, 2024 from 4-5 p.m. (Orleans-Ring 12, room 102).

Software update warning for the new Outlook version from 2024

The new Outlook version will replace the pre-installed e-mail program in Windows from 2024, and later also the classic Outlook from the Office package. The new version synchronizes data with the Microsoft Cloud when using IMAP or POP (Exchange is not affected), whereby e-mail content and passwords are transmitted to Microsoft. Do not use the option to switch to the new version! Continue to use your current Outlook version, which will still be usable.

Shutdown of the WIFI network "wwu" on 07.11.2023

The renaming of the university also affects the naming of the WIFI accesses.
Therefore, the WIFI network "wwu" will be switched off on Tuesday, 07.11.2023.
As a replacement, the WIFI network "uni-ms" is available in all university buildings.

New license codes available for SPSS 29

The new license codes for the statistical program SPSS 29 are now available. The software version does not change in this license year.

Disconnection of the WiFi Cell “wwu“

At the beginning of November, the WiFi cell "wwu" will be switched off due to the name change of the University of Münster. As an alternative, the new wireless cell "uni-ms" will be available. Find out how to set up your new access to the university WiFi in our WiFi instructions.

Securing the IT portal via 2-factor security

Access to the IT portal will soon be secured in such a way that logging in will only be possible with WWU ID + WWU password + one-time password (OTP) or with a digital ID.
All users who have not yet set 2-factor security or *only* 2-factor security with MTAN in the IT portal will be asked to change their settings by circular email.

More security

Interface between the University of Münster and the Federal Networks is certified by the Federal Office for Information Security

Since 20.12.2022, the network transition between the University of Münster and the Federal Network-Connection Network has been certified with the "ISO 27001 certificate based on IT-Grundschutz" for secure data exchange. This certification is based on an elaborate auditing process, which WWU IT was the first university unit nationwide to successfully pass. The audit enabled the University of Münster's already high level of security to be further increased.

Approval of applications in the online tool WWUBEN from 01.06.2023 only with OTP

From 01.06.2023, the approval of group membership and identification applications in the online tool WWUBEN can only be used with 2-factor authentication via OTP (one-time password).
If you have not used OTP so far, you will need to install an OTP generator as an app on your smartphone and register it in the IT portal.

From 23.03.2023: Remote desktops only accessible via VPN

As the next step in the implementation of increased security measures, all remote desktops will only be accessible via a VPN connection from 23.03.2023 onwards. You establish a VPN connection by setting up the Cisco Secure Client (Cisco AnyConnect).

Shutdown of OpenVPN as of 16.03.2023

For security reasons, VPN access via OpenVPN will be switched off as of 16.03.2023. We therefore ask everyone who has been using OpenVPN to switch to the Cisco Secure Client (formerly Cisco AnyConnect VPN).

New media technology: document camera

Goodbye overhead projector. Document cameras can now be borrowed in some buildings at WWU Münster. The ELMO L-12F Visual Presenter is used to visually display documents or objects during presentations. The arm and camera head are adjustable and allow for flexible use. The document cameras can be connected to the media systems as well as laptops.

2-Factor Authentication: Implementation from November 7th, 2022

We are becoming safer! The WWU introduces 2-factor authentication for individual services that allow external access to internal WWU data and programs. This is a first step towards better protection against hacker attacks and other security incidents.

User survey 2022: High satisfaction with IT support at WWU

More than 2,500 WWU members took part in the recent online survey, roughly equal numbers of students and employees. The results confirm the already very good results of previous years. Additional topics this year were IT security, PC pools and a planned chatbot.

Shutdown of DIN A4/A3 printing

As already announced, the ZIVstandard and ZIVlab printers has been terminated on 31.08.2022.

Printing of DIN A4 and DIN A3 jobs is instead possible from that point on via the multifunction devices, which are accessible at many different locations at the WWU.

The printing of posters via the printer ZIVposter is also still possible.

The new licenses for the statistics program SPSS 28 are now available.
They can be purchased - as usual - at the service desk.
SPSS 27 licenses can be used until 30.10.2021.

Building opening

As of Monday, 07.06.2021, our building will be open again with the services at the service desk at the regular opening hours (Mon.-Fri., 08:00-18:30). The user advisory service will offer its services on site again from 14.06.21, until then it will continue to be available by telephone from Mon.-Fri., 10:00-17:00 at 0251 83 31900. Only the pool rooms will remain closed until further notice.

20 Years of WLAN at Münster University

Wireless internet access has become an essential part of everyday university life. It opens up many possibilities in study, research and teaching and is not without reason the most used IT service at the WWU, along with the email service. It's hard to believe that the technology was only introduced at WWU 20 years ago – and a lot has happened since then.

Next Milestone: sciebo Reaches 200,000 Users

Since sciebo is perfectly suited for digital work, the university cloud has been able to gain more fans in Corona times: The magic number of 200,000 users has now been cracked - an increase of about 70,000 within a year. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4 more institutions have added sciebo to their repertoire, so that the service is now offered at 19 universities of applied sciences, 13 universities, one research center and one university library center. Within 6 years, sciebo has become an integral part of the North Rhine-Westphalian higher education landscape and exemplifies networking on a wide variety of levels.

INF Project on Research Data Management Launched

Research data management tools and infrastructures for visualisation, analysis and sustainable software development are the focus of the project with which WWU IT is participating in the Collaborative Research Centre "inSight". Within the network, a specific imaging methodology will be developed to identify links between cellular inflammation mechanisms and the function of organs.

New PC Pool in the Vom-Stein-Haus Lecture Room

From Monday (16.11.2020) WWU IT will provide a temporary PC pool room with 72 laptops for students in the lecture room of the Vom-Stein-Haus (Schlossplatz 34). This room can be used in particular for participation in digital courses via WWUzoom. Registration is not required. The room is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.

Service Desk & IT User Support Open Again

PC Pools Temporarily Closed

Our service desk (incl. print collection) and IT user support teams are again available to you personally and by telephone. For IT user support, please make an appointment in advance on 0251 83 31900. The PC pools in Einsteinstraße are closed until further notice due to a technical fault in the ventilation system. Alternatively, you can use our temporary pool in the lecture hall of the Vom-Stein-Haus.

We are looking for a student assistant (m/f/d) to support our service team at the earliest possible date. The weekly working time is 8 hours, a long-term cooperation is desired.

The new licenses for the statistics program SPSS 27 are now available.
They can be purchased - as usual - at the service desk.
SPSS 26 licenses can be used until 31.12.2020.

WWU IT Building (Einsteinstr. 60) Reopened

As of 20.07.2020, the WWU IT building at Einsteinstraße 60 will be open to visitors again. All services of the service desk will be available. After registering at the service desk, the print pick-up station and the PC rooms can also be used. The IT user support (including the multimedia workstations) will remain available only by telephone until further notice.

New Access Path for VPN

To establish a VPN connection to the WWU network, the OpenVPN client should be used from now on instead of the previous access path via the Cisco Anyconnect Client.

New Service for Video Communication: WWUzoom

To meet the increasing demand for reliable video communication solutions for scenarios with many participants, Münster University has acquired a campus license for Zoom Meeting.

Temporary closure of the Print & Pay printing service

From Wednesday, 18 March 2020, 12 noon, the printing service of WWU IT at Einsteinstraße 60 (Print & Pay / Official Printing) will be discontinued until 17 July 2020. This follows from the Rectorate's decisions to close Münster University buildings. The sending of print jobs to the printers zivstandard and zivposter will also be stopped during this period as far as possible.

Cancellation of Courses, Closure of PC Pools and IT user support

Due to the current dynamic developments regarding the corona virus, we have decided to cancel all WWU IT software courses as well as to close the PC pools and our presence service of service desk and IT user support (Einsteinstraße, ULB, Bispinghof) until 19 April 2020.
We kindly ask you to contact the service desk and IT user support by telephone for the time being.
These preventive measures are intended to protect the health of students and employees.

Free Office 365 via WWU

From 01.04.2020 Office 365 will be available free of charge to Münster University members. The prerequisite for this is the creation of a Microsoft Azure ID in our IT portal (formerly MyZIV). You can find further information on our software webpages.

New IT User Regulations

Due to changes in the Higher Education Act NRW, the IT User Regulations of Münster University have been updated. The revised, now valid version can be viewed on our website.

New Protection Mechanism for E-Mail Reception

In order to protect you better against e-mails with potentially dangerous file attachments and links, we now only deliver e-mails with suspicious content from suspicious senders with a warning notice.

ZIV and StabITuP become "WWU IT"

Münster University will have a new IT centre called "WWU IT" at the beginning of 2020. The Zentrum für Informationsverarbeitung (ZIV) and the Stabstelle IT und Prozessentwicklung (StabITuP/IVV9) will join forces to tackle the challenges of digitization in a united manner in the future.

WLAN: "uni-ms" Is Switched Off

To simplify our services, the WLAN with the name "uni-ms" will be switched off as of Monday, 16.09.2019. All users are asked to switch to the WLAN networks "wwu" or "eduroam" as soon as possible. If one of these networks is already set up on your mobile devices, there is no need for action. Otherwise, please follow our configuration instructions.
