Now more than ever, the professional development of trainee teachers bears the responsibility of promoting democratic values. The ZLB’s Teacher Education Days aim to contribute to this. The seminar ‘Dictatorship and Democracy in Sport – National Socialist Sport and Sport Today’ (Reinhart) contributed to the Teacher Education Days with, amongst other things, posters, podcasts and its own website. Just under half a year after the start of the research collaboration between the German Equestrian Federation (FN) and the IfS (Reinhart/Krüger), a colloquium was held with Master’s students and experts from the equestrian world to discuss the current state of the research and present the findings to date from their own source research.

From 29 June to 1 July 2026, the Willibald Gebhardt Institute hosted the international CEREPS Summit 2026 at the Franz-Hitze-Haus in Münster. CEREPS is a European-focused research network that promotes research and networking in the fields of physical education, sports instruction and school sport. More than 60 participants from academia, the field, politics and sport exchanged views on current developments in children’s and youth sport in schools and clubs.
The Education and Culture in Sport research group was also actively represented: Yoonkyu Song chaired an international symposium on inclusive physical education teacher training, at which Prof. Dr Helga Leinweber presented a paper from a German perspective. Laura van de Loo also presented a poster during the poster session.
The summit thus provided an important opportunity for international exchange and further networking within a European context.

As part of the ‘Individual Support and Psychomotor Skills’ module, led by Dr C. Bohn, a group from St Theresia Kindergarten in Münster visited the university. The students had prepared a wide range of physical activities for the pre-school children in the psychomotor skills room. Whilst the children experimented with unfamiliar materials at various stations and practised their motor skills through swinging, jumping, balancing, climbing and so on, the trainee PE teachers had the opportunity to hone their diagnostic skills and apply their pedagogical knowledge and abilities in ‘real-life’ conditions. It was therefore a special and rewarding event for everyone involved!

Skateboarding has been an Olympic sport since the Tokyo Olympics (2020/21). Rather than unanimous enthusiasm, the reaction within the scene has been divided. Some fear that skateboarding will be commercialised and that its ‘punk’ spirit will be lost.

We’ll be discussing the tension between lifestyle and competitive sport with some of skateboarding’s most influential figures: Titus Dittmann, ‘Cola’ Kuhn and Julius Dittmann.

The academic book "History of Body Culture, Sport and Education" was just published by Prof. Dr. Micheal Krüger, former professor for history of sport at the Institute, and the palgrave macmillan publisher. It collates and contextualises a considerable body of work on sports theaory, science and education. Further, the book provides a European perspective reflecting on the importance of German-speaking research to the sport sociology field. It reflects on the influcne of sports on nation-building.

Following a joint course taught by Prof. Dr Michael Krüger, former Head of the Department of Sports Education and Sports History, and JProf. Dr Helga Leineweber, Head of the (new) Department of Education and Culture in Sport, a book on ‘The Olympics and Olympism’ has now been published. The tri-sectioned book brings together texts by recognised experts on ethical, historical and educational issues relating to Olympic sport and has been published by Meyer & Meyer Verlag as the 18th volume in the Willibald Gebhardt Institute’s series.

From May 14 to 16, 2026, the Departments of Education and Culture in Sport and Physical Education and Teaching in Sport participated in the 39th Annual Conference of the dvs Section Sport Pedagogy in Frankfurt am Main. The conference was held under the theme “Educational Biographies in Sport – Actors in Dialogue.”

“Women Into Science” is an event organized by the Equal Opportunity Commission, taking place on May 11 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The goal is to raise the profile of women in science and showcase a variety of career paths. Female scientists will share their personal career stories, offer insights into their daily work lives, and discuss the experiences, challenges, and opportunities they have encountered on their journey into science.

Antonia Friedrich wrote her master’s thesis under the supervision of Kai Reinhart and Eike Boll on the history of skiing in the Ahrntal Valley. The thesis has now been published with support from the Province of South Tyrol and other sponsors under the title "Spuren im Ahrntaler Schnee" (engl. 'Traces in the Ahrntal Snow').

Jun.-Prof. Helga Leineweber and Dr. Barbara Halberschmidt have edited the book 'Schulsport, Transdisziplinäre Erkenntnisse und Implikationen für die Praxis'.
The book examines the diverse demands placed on school sport and explores how the educational objectives of physical education can be achieved. To understand how sport in a school setting can contribute to pupils’ cognitive, emotional and social development, and what conditions need to be taken into account, the book draws on perspectives from sports pedagogy, sports psychology and other disciplines.

As part of the lecture series ‘On your marks... Sports history as social history’ (german org: 'Auf die Plätze...' Sportgeschichte(n) als Gesellschaftsgeschichte') at the Research Centre 'Forschungsstelle Zeitgeschichte', Dr. Kai Reinhart gave a lecture on the development of skateboarding in the USA and Germany. In particular, the question of the (Olympic) future of skateboarding led to a lively discussion at the renowned FZ Hamburg.

As part of the BMBFSFJ ComeSport project, the departments of education and culture in sport and physical education and teaching research in sport have developed training courses, teaching ideas, and materials for p.e. teachers on the topic of “Body image and social media in school sports.” From December 3-5, 2025, a meeting was held in Münster with colleagues from the ComeNet 5 subproject in Paderborn and Leipzig to implement the digital reuse of the training concepts developed in a uniform manner on platforms such as WirLernenOnline (We’re learning online). The project is thus successfully approaching its conclusion at the end of February 2026.
 

The Sports Institute was represented by JProf. Dr. Helga Leineweber and Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber at the conference of the DGfE Commission for Sports Education in Osnabrück. The conference programme focused on the question of the extent to which current social challenges influence sports education and put it under pressure to transform. Helga Leineweber and Prof. Dr. Sabine Reuker from the German Sport University Cologne gave a presentation on diversity-sensitive teaching perception – a professional requirement that is particularly relevant for sports teachers. In addition, results from the ComeSport project were presented in the form of a poster. In this project, the departments of Education and Culture in Sport and Physical Education and Teaching Research in Sport are jointly working on the topic of “body image and social media” and preparing it for the further training of sports teachers and sports lessons.

On Saturday of the first weekend in November, Special Olympics North Rhine-Westphalia (SONRW) held its first volunteer congress at the Institute for Sports Science. Around 80 participants with and without disabilities came together to discuss volunteering within Special Olympics, learn from each other in a wide range of workshops, and look to the future with new inspiration and ideas. Students from the institute's teacher training programmes took part with great interest and contributed to the exchange. The cooperation and provision of the facilities was made possible by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Helga Leineweber, so that the congress could take place on the same site as the 2024 State Games.
In addition, the SONRW sports coordinators took advantage of the event and held a conference in conjunction with it.
 

The scientific foundations and practical implementation possibilities of subject-specific education in a language-sensitive physical education classroom were the focus of a workshop offered by Prof. Dr. Helga Leineweber as part of an interdisciplinary conference at Ratsgymnasium Minden. The one-day conference, titled “Language Education in Subject Teaching – Foundations and Perspectives for a New Learning Culture,” emphasized cross-phase networking: teachers from several schools, experts in teacher training, and researchers discussed current concepts of continuous language education—an interdisciplinary task that concerns all school subjects and to which physical education can make an important contribution.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Institute of Sports Science, Kai Reinhart and Michael Krüger have published a special edition of the journal STADION, which was officially presented at the IfS anniversary celebration (16 September 2025). It focuses on the history of the IfS in Münster, but also covers numerous other exemplary sports science institutions in Germany and around the world.

As part of the VP Inline Skating at School (Dr Reinhart), a roller sports project was carried out in cooperation with the Pascal-Gymnasium in Münster (7-10 July). Over four days, the students taught 23 pupils from Year 5 to Year 10 various aspects of inline skating, from basic riding techniques to inline hockey and artistic roller skating.

Eike Boll presented the cooperation project between the Institute of Sports Science and the Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology as part of the lunchtime training course - a series of training sessions at the University Hospital for paediatric doctors and anyone interested. The focus was particularly on the snow sports project and its development in recent years. The exchange with colleagues from the clinic was very beneficial for the perspective of the overall project, which also offers various water sports and a climbing and bouldering programme for children and young people with cancer. Once again, the multi-professional orientation of the project became clear: in addition to doctors from the various paediatric disciplines, the training also involved specialists from the fields of sports, occupational and physiotherapy.

In 1925, the year the Institute of Sports Science was founded, there were more and more opportunities to take part in sport at the university. After graduation, however, things still looked bleak: It was not appropriate for adults to run around the sports field in shorts. The first director of the Institute of Physical Education, Dr Hugo Wagner, therefore founded the ‘Alt Akademiker Abteilung’ e. V., in which graduates would continue to have the opportunity to play sport - fistball to be precise. The AAA still does this today, so that it, like the IfS, can celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. Dr Kai Reinhart was the guest of honour at the anniversary celebration in the Mühlenhof (12.7.25), where he addressed the guests.

The Olympic Study Day 2025 at the Institute of Sports Science at the University of Münster, organized by the Willibald Gebhardt Institute in cooperation with the Department of Education and Culture in Sport, was very well received. Over 100 participants attended in person or online to listen intently to the two speakers’ fascinating presentations on the topic of “Asian Perspectives on the Olympic Movement.” Representatives of the German Olympic Academy (DOA) also joined the event. A martial arts day took place at the Institute of Sports Science during Whitsun week as part of a master's seminar on the practical education course ‘Wrestling and Fighting’ taught by Kai Reinhart. With the help of the college students, 27 6th grade students from the Ratsgymnasium in Münster learnt the basic rules and tried out various wrestling and fighting techniques. At the end, a tournament was held in the dojo (martial arts room) of the sports centre.

Our aim is to train qualified coaches - regardless of whether they have a handicap or not. This training leads to the DOSB-recognised trainer licence C (“interdisciplinary”) and is conducted and managed by the Modern Pentathlon Association in compliance with all DOSB regulations.
As with anything new, there is often reluctance or uncertainty. But those who take on this opportunity can not only learn a lot, but also actively contribute to making the sport more accessible for everyone! What began as a private WhatsApp group culminated in the first big sports science alumni party last Saturday (17 May). The 500 tickets for the party in the new B-Side at Münster's central harbour were quickly sold out. ‘Finally another IfL party,’ said a delighted former student, who said he had been waiting 30 years for this. In addition to the reunion with old fellow students and lecturers, the ‘Reisegruppe Hardrock’ attracted guests with live music and a DJ team from Antenne Münster. The special edition of the traditional IfS jumpers/shirts sold like hot cakes. However, the celebrations also felt particularly good that evening because all proceeds were donated to various social sports projects, such as the skiing trip with children suffering from cancer and the sports sponsors.

As part of the BMBF project ComeSport, the Education and Culture in Sport and Physical Education and Teaching in Sport departments are developing training courses for teachers as well as teaching ideas and materials on the topic of social media and body image in PE lessons. In the last week of March, a meeting was held with project partners from Paderborn and Leipzig - for the second time at the University of Münster. This time, the focus of the meeting was on discussing the possibilities of digital subsequent use on the ComeSport portal, which Moritz Rüller (Institute for Psychology in Education and Training, University of Münster) explained.

 
At the 2nd asp theme day ‘Hate Speech in Social Media’ at the DSHS Cologne, Dr Marion Golenia Department of Physical Education and Teaching Research and Junior Professor Dr Helga Leineweber Department of Education and Culture presented findings from the ComeSport project to experts and interested parties from the fields of sports psychology, psychotherapy and psychiatry, boarding school education and sports science. The focus was on the effects of social media consumption on the body image of adolescents and young adults.
Further contributions were made by former tennis pro Dustin Brown, who reported on his experiences with hate comments on social media platforms in an interview with Marion Sulprizio. Wiebke Dierkes and Juliane Coßmann also presented a workshop concept on dealing with social media for young athletes.

 

Cand. Phil. Yoonkyu Song, PhD student at the Institute of Sport Science in the Department of Education and Culture in Sport, represented the Willibald Gebhardt Institute (WGI) at the First International Olympic Research Conference in India/ Ahmadabad.
The megacity is a promising candidate to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
In one of his two lectures, Yoonkyu presented the WGI's work on Olympic education and history. The other lecture was about his dissertation on sports development in divided nations using the example of Germany and Korea.
We are thankful to Yoonkyu Song for his commitment to the WGI and sports education in Münster.

The climbing project of the Institute of Sports Science, the University Hospital Münster and the Children's Cancer Aid Münster e.V. was honored as a special project for children and young people at the award ceremony for the Citizens' Prize of the City of Münster. The special feature: Children and young people between the ages of 8 and 18 decide on the funding of the individual projects in the newly founded funding forum of the city of Münster. The climbing project was the only project to receive the maximum amount of funding.

The departments of Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport were well represented at the 47th annual conference of the Sports Education Commission of the German Society for Educational Science in Oldenburg Castle. Dr Kathrin Kohake, Andre Magner, Uta Kaundinya and Ute Große-Westermann each gave a presentation on didactic issues relating to the education of PE teachers at universities, putting Münster's teaching and examination concepts up for discussion.

In the BMBF project ComeSport, the Department of Education and Culture in Sport and the Department of Education and Teaching in Sport are developing training courses for teachers on the topic of social media and body image in PE lessons. A meeting with other project partners has now taken place at Leipzig University. The first training sessions have already been tested.

At the 3rd Cologne Day of School Sport, Dr Marion Golenia (Dept. of Physical Education and Teaching Research) and Junior Professor Dr Helga Leineweber (Dept. of Education and Culture in Sport) held a theoretical and practical workshop for PE teachers in which they presented current scientific findings on the connection between body images in social media and body images among children and young people. Following on from this, they tested and discussed ways of addressing the topic in PE lessons together with the teachers. The content and materials developed as part of the BMBF-funded ComeSport project were thus subjected to an initial ‘rigorous test’. Further ideas and materials for sports lessons on this complex topic are now being successively developed and trialled.
 

The new anthology "Schulsport 2030 - Analysen von Lehr-/Lernwerkzeugen und Praxismaßnahmen in der Sportlehrkräftebildung" by Dr. Fabian Pels and Prof. Dr. Jens Kleinert, with the contribution "Auf den zweiten Blick - seminaristische Einführung in die professionelle Wahrnehmung von Lehren und Lernen im Sportunterricht anhand von Videovignetten" by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Helga Leinweber, Lars Fischer and Dr. Petra Guardiera, has been published by Nomos and Academia Verlag.

The aim of the project is a demand-oriented development of physical activity for children and adolescents with disabilities with a focus on the health promotion of the target group. The basis for this is a scientific needs assessment for the professional implementation of which we are now looking for support.

Dr. Maria Campos from the University of Coimbra (Portugal) came to visit the IfS to coincide with the Special Olympics State Games, most of which took place at the University Sports Campus. Maria Campos is one of this year's fellows of the Women in Research (WiRE) program of the University of Münster. Together with JProf. Dr. Helga Leineweber, Dep. Education and Culture, she is conducting the project "Fostering Physical Education 4 All Abilities". This transnational project aims at analyzing the self-efficacy of prospective physical education teachers in Portugal and Germany in order to develop professional skills in inclusive settings.

This year, the German Sports Teachers' Association DSLV (NRW state association), in cooperation with Unfallkasse NRW, is once again awarding the prize for the best university thesis in the subject of sport. The prize is awarded to both Bachelor's and Master's theses and is endowed with a total of €3,000.
We encourage all students with outstanding theses in the above-mentioned subject area to take part. The prerequisite for application is a grade of 1.0 or 1.3 for the submitted thesis (please enclose proof). You can find more details in the announcement text or under this link.

Two IfS departments presented current research projects at the AIESEP annual conference in Jyväskylä, Finland, as part of scientific presentations. Junior Professor Dr. Helga Leineweber, Dr. Kathrin Kohake, Malte Stoffers and Andre Magner also used the time to exchange ideas with many international researchers.

As part of the BMBF joint project ComeSport, the members of ComeNet 5 met at Paderborn University from 29 to 30 April 2024 to discuss the topic of "Body images and social media in school sport". The participants from the universities of Leipzig, Münster and Paderborn are jointly developing training courses for PE teachers on the ComeNet topic. At this project meeting, initial ideas for the individual training modules at the locations were presented and discussed.
The Institute of Sport Science was represented at this meeting by staff from the Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport departments.

 

The chapter "Collegiate Esports in South Korea and the United States" by Prof Dr Lars Dzikus with Yoonkyu as co-author has been published in the book "Critical Perspectives on Esports".
The chapter introduces the history and governance of collegiate Esports and compares how Esports developed within colleges in their respective countries and outlines difficulties that arise, especially in relation to power

A research day was held on Wednesday, 22 May, to mark the start of the Special Olympics NRW state games. The event, which was jointly organized by the Department of Education and Culture in Sport (Prof. Dr. Helga Leineweber) and the Department of Sport Psychology (Dr. Lena Henning) in cooperation with the Willibald Gebhardt Institute, aimed to bring together different stakeholders in the field of sport for people with intellectual or multiple disabilities. Scientists and students from Leipzig, Münster, Stuttgart and Graz not only gave presentations on current teaching concepts and research findings, but also discussed practical implications and further research and development needs with representatives from Special Olympics Germany and some state associations as well as athletes, coaches and supervisors. The event was supported by Unfallkasse NRW.

The cooperation project with the university hospital took place again in Kleinwalsertal in March. Students from Module 10 were involved in the project. The team, led by Eike Boll, offered ski courses at all skill levels for the 22 participating children and young people and their families and was also able to adequately resolve therapy-related restrictions. As a pilot project, two of the participating patients were tested in advance using the "Movement Assessment Battery for Children (M-ABC-2)" motor skills test. Initial results in the re-test showed strikingly positive results, particularly in the area of balance. The project is financially supported by Kinderkrebshilfe Münster e.V.

The Special Olympics National Games will take place in Münster from 22 May to 25 May 2024. The organisers are still looking for motivated helpers who can support them in exciting and varied activities.

The FaBiS (Fachliche Bildung im Sportunterricht) project group with Prof. Dr Ilka Lüsebrink (PH Freiburg), Prof. Dr Vera Volkmann (Uni Hannover) and Prof. Dr Petra Wolters (Uni Vechta) came together at the Sports Institute at the invitation of JProf. Dr Helga Leineweber (Uni Münster) for the third working meeting. Over the course of two days, the staging of exercise processes in PE lessons and the resulting activities of the learners were analysed using instructional videos. The results will be presented at a conference in the summer.

Announcement Special Olympics Research Day on 22 May 2024 The fifth Special Olympics NRW State Games will take place in Münster in May 2024. On the occasion of this event, we would like to invite you to a scientific research day immediately beforehand. The aim of this day is to bring together and discuss the current state of knowledge on the topic of sport by and with people with intellectual and multiple disabilities from different perspectives and disciplines and to exchange ideas with each other. The cooperation project between the Institute of Sports Science and Münster University Hospital, led by Eike Boll, is being expanded to include climbing and bouldering. The aim is to introduce children and young people with cancer to new exercise options. Students from the Institute of Sports Science support this project by teaching safety techniques and accompanying all participants on their way to independent climbing.

As part of the BMBF joint project ComeSport, the kick-off meeting of ComeNet 5 on the topic of "Body images and social media in school sport" took place from 2 to 3 November in Münster. The meeting focussed on deepening the joint research work and preparing the upcoming work phases.
The universities of Leipzig, Münster and Paderborn are involved in the project. The Institute of Sport Science was represented by staff from the Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport departments.

On September 13 and 14, this year's second research meeting of the project team on "Subject-based Education in Sport", FaBiS for short, took place. The focus was on the joint research work, in which exercise processes in physical education were analyzed on the basis of instructional videos. In addition, initial preparations were made for a research proposal. Four universities are involved in the project: Ilka Lüsebrink (missing on the photo) from PH Freiburg, Vera Volkmann from the University of Hildesheim, Helga Leineweber from the University of Münster and Petra Wolters from the University of Vechta.

From August 10 to 11, the conference of the Accident Insurance Fund NRW took place at the WTB Sports School. The topic was the sensitization of teacher trainees with regard to children and adolescents who are unsafe (using the example of school sports) as a challenge in teacher training.
Eike Boll (AB Education and Culture in Sport) led a practical workshop this year. The subject leaders of sport of the training location in Westphalia got an insight into differentiated movement possibilities in the area of the backstroke games and discussed these.

As part of the BMBF's ComeSport joint project, the Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport work areas have approved a project on the digitalization of sports teacher training.
The project addresses the question of how physical education teachers can address students' body images, which are influenced by social media.

The Special Olympics World Games will take place in Berlin from 17.06. to 25.06.2023.
Already last week (12.06.-15.06.2023) the delegation from the Netherlands was welcomed and hosted in Münster in the course of the 'Host-Town-Program'.
In an interview with Münster aktiv, Junior Professor Dr. Helga Leineweber explains the significance of the Special Olympics in connection with inclusion and inclusive sports.

At the world's largest inclusive sports event, the Special Olympics World Games, several thousand athletes with intellectual and multiple disabilities compete with and against each other in 26 sports.
This year, the Special Olympics World Games will take place in Berlin from June 17 to 25, 2023, and thus for the first time in Germany.
As part of the project seminar "Special Olympics", the Sports Institute will also participate in the Host Town Project in Münster from June 12 to 15, 2023. A subsequent visit to the Special Olympics World Games is also part of it.

The fifth State Games of Special Olympics NRW for people with intellectual and multiple disabilities will take place in Münster from May 22-25, 2024. For this purpose, the joint framework agreement was signed by the Lord Mayor Markus Lewe and the President of Special Olympics NRW - Gerhard Stiens - on May 22, 2023. The event is expected to attract 7,000 athletes and showcase 18 sports. Students are also welcome to attend.
Junprof. Dr. Helga Leineweber coordinates the implementation of the event with a working group, consisting of all work areas, at the IfS.

Within the framework of a staged integration project, the barriers to entry into club sports are to be structurally evaluated and approaches to eliminating them sought, the solutions found are to be introduced and established through practice-oriented localization, and the sustainable anchoring in club sports is to be evaluated.

As part of a cooperation project between the DSHS Cologne, the University of Leipzig and the WWU Münster, joint digital teaching events again took place during the week of December 12-16.
The teaching cooperation developed in the course of the  project Schulsport 2030 (School Sport 2030) within the framework of the Quality Offensive Teacher Education and has now established itself as a fixed component of the teaching program at the three locations.

Helga Leineweber has been teaching and researching as an juniorprofessor at the Institute of Sport Science since September 2022, where she heads the research area Education and Culture in Sport. The work area was established for the winter semester 2022/23 and thus represents the most recent expansion at the Institute of Sport Science and underscores the importance of qualified (training) education for future sport teachers.

For the excursion "Mountain Sports" from September 6 to 13, a position as an sports-assistant is available. The main tasks are to support the preparation and running of the event. Experience in mountaineering/mountain hiking, via ferrata or mountain biking is required, licenses or coaching certificates are desirable. Long-term support for the excursion is desirable. If you are interested, please contact Eike Boll or Eric Eils by 28.06.2024 with a short letter of motivation stating the number of semesters, experience in the sports and other skills.

The Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport departments are working in cooperation with the universities of Leipzig and Paderborn in the BMBF joint project ComeSport, which is part of the lernen:digital competence network. The first conference entitled ‘Shaping digital transformation for schools and teacher training’ took place in Potsdam from 30 September to 2 October 2024. Ulrike Franken from the Department of Education and Culture in Sport took part on behalf of the University of Münster. 
The current work in the ComeNet 5 project ‘Body images and social media in school sport’ was presented in a lecture. Specifically, the individual contribution dealt with the needs analyses of the three locations Münster, Leipzig and Paderborn and the consequences to be drawn from this for the conception of the planned training project. 
After analysing the needs and determining the consequences, the task now is to implement these in training modules and design demand-oriented units.
