Doctoral positions

Twice a year, we advertise doctoral positions in all research fields of Mathematics Münster. Early career researchers play a vital role in our research community.

How to apply?

Calls for applications for doctoral positions are published on our website Calls biannually in spring and autumn, as well as on the job platforms of the EMS and the AMS (mathjobs.org). Applications are submitted via an online form. Applications outside of these periods are not possible. Applications must include a cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates, full academic transcripts, and evidence of English proficiency. In addition, applications must be supported by at least two letters of reference to be submitted directly by the referees.

How are applicants selected?

Applicants are selected by a committee representing all mathematical fields at Mathematics Münster. Investigators from Mathematics Münster provide advice to the committee. The main selection criterion is academic excellence. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview.

How are doctoral positions remunerated?

We offer fixed-term part-time positions for doctoral researchers for 3 years, meaning that you will receive an employment contract (75 % FTE at E13 TV‑L level for doctoral positions) by the university as a scientific employee (in German: Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in).

Depending on the source of funding, you may be required to teach up to 3 hours per week during the semester. Some of the positions are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), either through the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster or other funding sources. The financial terms of the positions remain consistent regardless of the funding source.
