This workshop aims to help doctoral researchers develop strategies to address (potential) ethical challenges, promoting good scientific practice in their academic setting. A balanced mix of trainer input and interactive hands-on activities enables participants to contribute their experiences to discussions about moral dilemmas, identifying virtues at stake and proposing solutions. Participants will receive links to relevant materials and contact persons for future reference.

Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be better able to:

– Clearly articulate the virtues guiding personal scientific practice
– Distinguish between the different types of ‘bad’ scientific practice
– Understand local, national and international regulations and guidelines governing research practice
– Make informed decisions that align with good scientific practice principles, considering the impact on oneself, colleagues, and the broader community

Requirements

Ein Forschungsprozess enthält zahlreiche Unwägbarkeiten, die eine Planung der Forschung und Ein-grenzung des Themas erschweren. Umso wichtiger ist, dass Promovierende von Beginn an Methoden kennen, mit denen sie ihr Thema immer wieder überprüfen, fokussieren und auf den Boden der Realisierbarkeit zurückholen können. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei das „so what“: Was ist das Ziel der Arbeit? Was soll herausgefunden werden, für welches Problem wird eine Lösung gesucht? Warum ist dies relevant für das Fach? Und wann ist es genug?

In diesem Workshop erproben die Teilnehmenden praxisnahe Schreib- und Visualisierungsmethoden, mit denen sie ihr Thema klären und eingrenzen, ihr Erkenntnisinteresse schärfen und eine bearbeitbare Fragestellung entwickeln. Dabei nehmen wir auch immer wieder die Realisierbarkeit in den Blick, damit die Promotionen in einer angemessenen Zeit abgeschlossen werden können.

DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS, EARLY-PHASE POSTDOCS

This workshop is intended to provide participants with some unconsciously intransparent or even consciously hidden information about a career in science and rules of the underlying game, giving additional relevant insights into the scientific system. The aim of the event is to appropriately encourage and empower scientists who are aiming for a career in academia to find their place in the hierarchical and competition-driven scientific community in a self-effective and proactive manner using customized approaches. A well-balanced combination of trainer input and interactive hands-on activities will allow participants to reflect on their own experiences with hierarchies and competition. Workshops goals are to recognize available resources and opportunities that may help them to overcome personal challenges and boundaries.

This workshop will cover:

1. The different career pathways towards Academic Independence: A systemic overview of the German academic system and its typical challenges and opportunities.
2. Confusing entanglements and contradictions: Traditional power principles with both corresponding privileges and related cultural and structural hurdles.
3. Science-specific gender & intercultural issues
4. The relevance of visibility, networks and micropolitics in terms of individual career success

Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will...

– have more transparency about the possible trajectories towards academic independence or a permanent position in the science sector in Germany

– have more clarity about how they have been personally affected by culture, structures, implicit rules and biases of the German academic system (i.e., privileges and marginalization, transparent and intransparent rules, experienced injustice, bias, discrimination, competition, lone wolf mentality, exclusion)

– have more specific ideas how to develop more awareness for gender and intercultural aspects on an individual and collective level and have learnt how to integrate these insights into their personal way of behaviour and communication

– have gained new perspectives on self-presentation and networking activities and have received suggestions how to realize that in their day-to-day life as a researcher

Requirements

B2 level of proficiency in English. Participants will be forwarded a questionnaire related to the topics of the workshop two weeks before the workshop. After the reflection and a week prior to the workshop, they send their responses back to the trainer. This is a prerequisite for attending the workshop.

PROMOVIERENDE (Teilnehmen können Personen, die auf Deutsch oder Englisch schreiben. Die Workshopsprache ist Deutsch.)

Was packt uns an einem wissenschaftlichen Text? Wann lesen wir neugierig weiter? Wissenschaft muss nicht trocken sein, sondern kann als eine spannende Reise vom Problem bis zur Lösung oder von der Frage bis zur Antwort erzählt werden. Hierbei machen wir uns Elemente des Storytellings, basierend auf der Heldenreise, nutzbar (vgl. z. B. Joshua Schimel, Writing Science). Dies hilft, den Kern des eigenen Forschungsprojekts herauszuschälen und die zentralen Stationen der Forschungsreise zu benennen – vergleichbar einer tatsächlichen Reise, bei der ich die zehn besten Bilder auswähle und nicht chronologisch mit allen 200 Bildern langweile.

Doch was kommt tatsächlich bei den Lesenden an? Dies lässt sich am besten mit Peer-Feedback herausfinden. Hierfür werden im Workshop die Grundlagen für eine motivierende, anfeuernde Friendly-Feedback-Kultur gelegt: Wann stärkt und ermutigt Feedback und warum ist dies so wichtig, um mit eigener Stimme souverän und selbstbewusst zu schreiben? Welche Feedbackformen passen zu wel-chem Textstadium? Wie gebe ich einen klaren Feedbackauftrag? Und wie kann ich einen Textfeedbackwunsch an das Kolloquium und die Betreuenden bestmöglich so kommunizieren, dass es mir weiterhilft, statt mich zu entmutigen?

Das Erlernte und Erfahrene soll nicht auf den Workshop begrenzt bleiben, sondern nachhaltig verankert werden. Hierfür wird der letzte Teil des Workshops als Kick off für selbstorganisierte Schreibgruppen genutzt. Die Teilnehmenden erfahren, welche Formate es gibt und haben die Möglichkeit, sich direkt zu Gruppen zu verabreden.

Analytical thinking is crucial for understanding research questions and solving problems in science. Before a problem can be solved, it must be thoroughly understood. The ability to dissect, categorize and analyze the content of thoughts in a context makes it possible to gain well-founded knowledge. Through the systematic application of analytical thinking, scientists can grasp complex phenomena more objectively and make their results comprehensible to
others. In this workshop, methods of analytical thinking are presented and applied in a scientific context and communication.

Outcomes

After this workshop, you will have a fundamental understanding of the following points and you will be able to implement them in your professional life:
– Describe research topics and projects analytically
– Structured approaches to strategically analyze topics and research
– Reframing processes in science: from analysis and critical reflection to reconstruction and communication

Wissenschaft verständlich zu vermitteln und in einen Dialog mit der Öffentlichkeit zu treten, ist eine wichtige Aufgabe von Forschenden. Warum springt die Begeisterung fürs eigene Projekt nicht unbedingt auf andere über? Wie ändert sich die Darstellung, wenn man von der Zielgruppe her denkt? Wie können wir spezifische Medien und Formate bespielen? Im Workshop gewinnen Sie eine erste Perspektive auf das Themenfeld Wissenschaftskommunikation  und entwickeln – ganz konkret – einen Text- oder Beitragsentwurf, den wir gemeinsam zu platzieren versuchen.

The primary objectives of this workshop are to help participants working in an intercultural research environment to reflect on their own communicative style, increase awareness of and empathy for other communicative styles in conflict situations and group contexts, and to learn techniques to be more assertive both vocally, linguistically and physically in situations where they would normally feel ill at ease.

This workshop will cover:

1. Working in an intercultural environment: who am I? who are you?
2. Dealing with conflict and misunderstandings: application to own case
3. Analysis of assertiveness and assertiveness techniques
4. Intercultural communication: my next steps

A satisfactory research experience demands a thoughtfully crafted path for individual growth. That’s where an Individual Development Plan (IDP) comes into play. An IDP is your roadmap, directing you through the intricacies of your personal, academic and career development aspirations. This series of peer-assisted sessions highlights key elements of the development planning process, providing a structured, supportive and motivating framework to set and achieve goals within a six-month timeframe. Have you documented your objectives and progress in a tangible format? Have you established regular check-ins with your peers and supervisor to discuss your goals and achievements? If not, this workshop series is for you!

POSTDOCS

This is not your standard project management workshop. We will not go over the basic theory of project management but instead use a hands-on approach to try to find solutions for the concrete challenges faced by the participants. Challenges will be collected (and voted on if necessary) in the beginning. We will then use break-out rooms to discuss potential solutions in small group settings. Finally, we will collect and summarize the results and, wherever appropriate, situate them within project management approaches and techniques.  

Outcomes

Participants will have:

– Gained an understanding of common project management challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers
– (Re)activated individual resources and practiced problem-solving methods to overcome hurdles when working on projects

Der Workshop gibt einen allgemeinen Überblick über das Thema Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM). Nach einer allgemeinen Einführung ins Thema werden ausgewählte Praxisbeispiele und konkrete Werkzeuge vorgestellt, z.B. zur Veröffentlichung oder Archivierung von Forschungsdaten. So erhalten die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer das nötige Rüstzeug, um moderne FDM-Aspekte auch in die eigene wissenschaftliche Arbeit einfließen zu lassen. Konkret werden die folgenden Themen behandelt:

1. Organisation der eigenen Forschungsdaten: Behalte den Überblick!
2. Arbeit mit Metadaten und Medien-Datenbanken
