Working paper on legal pluralism in (pre-)colonial India published

Two new volumes have been published in the EViR Working Papers open-access series. Working Paper 19, entitled “Mughal and Post-Mughal Legal Unity and Pluralism – Some Primary Sources”, examines sources on legal unity and legal pluralism in (pre-)colonial India. Working Paper 23.2 is the English translation of the final report from the first funding phase of the Kolleg.

New fellows in spring

As part of the Welcome Days at the start of the summer term, the Käte Hamburger Kolleg welcomed seven new fellows. The researchers – specialising in law, history and legal anthropology – along with some of the existing fellows, presented their projects and engaged in lively discussions about the various research initiatives in the field of legal unity and pluralism.

High school students explore Münster’s legal history

During the 2025/26 school year, pupils on the History Elective course in Year 13 at Münster Mitte Comprehensive School (Gesamtschule Münster Mitte) explored the history of law in Münster. The course took place in cooperation with the Käte Hamburger Kolleg “Legal Unity and Pluralism”.

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg's event programme for the 2026 summer semester has been published. The programme includes events dealing with both historical and contemporary dimensions of law.

Call for Applications: Journalist-in-Residence

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg is offering a four-week residency for journalists (starting between 2 and 16 November 2026). The residency at the Centre offers the opportunity to gain insights into current research topics, network with international researchers and realise your own journalistic research and/or writing project. Are human rights reaching their limits in Europe?

On 8 January 2026, the Käte Hamburger Kolleg ‘Legal Unity and Pluralism’ at the University of Münster hosted a panel discussion on whether human rights in Europe are reaching their limits in light of current developments in migration policy. The event was hosted by Prof. Dr. Nora Markard, co-director of the Kolleg.

Two new working papers published

Two new volumes have been published in the open access series of EViR Working Papers. One is a volume of contributions to the conceptual forum ‘Justiznutzung’ (Use of Justice), edited by Benjamin Seebröker, and the other is the final report on the first funding phase of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, edited by Ulrike Ludwig and Peter Oestmann.
