Two new volumes have been published in the EViR Working Papers open-access series. Working Paper 19, entitled “Mughal and Post-Mughal Legal Unity and Pluralism – Some Primary Sources”, examines sources on legal unity and legal pluralism in (pre-)colonial India. Working Paper 23.2 is the English translation of the final report from the first funding phase of the Kolleg.

In “Mughal and Post-Mughal Legal Unity and Pluralism – Some Primary Sources”, Kaveh Yazdani examines key aspects of legal unity and legal pluralism in (pre-)colonial India. Drawing on selected sources from the 17th and early 19th centuries, he demonstrates, firstly, the Hanafi codification of unequal class relations under Aurangzeb; secondly, the coexistence of religion-based legal systems within the Mughal Empire; and thirdly, the regulation of community affairs according to group-specific norms – even beyond South Asia.

Working Paper 23.2 is the final report on the first funding phase of the Käte Hamburger Research Group (1 June 2021 to 31 May 2025), now available in English. Edited by Ulrike Ludwig and Peter Oestman, the publication focuses on the research discussions and findings, as well as the science communication and outreach activities of the research group during the first funding phase.
