About us
The Käte Hamburger Kolleg ‘Legal Unity and Pluralism’ (EViR) at the University of Münster is a meeting place for fellows from all over the world. Here they examine the dynamic tension between legal unity and pluralism from antiquity to the present day. This is the first attempt to systematically investigate the phenomenon in its entire historical depth and across disciplinary boundaries. The Kolleg has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) since 2021.
The central concern of the Kolleg is to recognise the simultaneity of unity and plurality as a structural feature of law in its social embedding. With its innovative approach, it aims to contribute to a more differentiated understanding of law and its complexity. To this end, it brings scholars from different countries and research traditions into a dialogue and fosters a deeper mutual understanding between disciplines. The focus is therefore on the fellowship programme and joint discussions in various formats. At the same time, the Kolleg offers its fellows sufficient time and excellent working conditions for their individual research.
The Kolleg is led by two directors, who are supported by a rotating research professorship and an academic advisory board. The work of the Kolleg is supported by several research assistants, while a service team ensures that day-to-day business runs smoothly.
