Event programme for the 2026 summer semester

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg's event programme for the summer semester 2026 has been published and can be downloaded here. The programme includes events dealing with both historical and contemporary dimensions of law.

The programme begins with the workshop ‘Forum Shopping: Was It Crucial in the Legal Support of Early Modern Long-Distance Trade?’ on 7 and 8 May 2026. Organiser Ana Belem Fernández Castro will explore the question of how disputes were resolved legally in early modern Europe. The event will discuss the reasons why merchants chose certain jurisdictional options in this context and the consequences of their choices.

This will be followed by two conceptual forums. First, in the conceptual forum he has organised, „‚Kartellbildung‘ – ein Modell soziopolitischer Organisation im Spannungsfeld von Konkurrenz und Institutionalisierung’ on 21 May 2026, Gunnar Seelentag will examine patterns of action in group formation and cooperation in selected sociopolitical spaces.

The second concept forum is entitled ‘Unity and pluralism of legal personhood. Historical and contemporary perspectives’. The event, organised by Fernando Liendo-Tagle, will take place on 2 June 2026 and will focus on legal personhood and related concepts from a historical and contemporary perspective.

On 8 and 9 June 2026, a workshop will be held on this year's annual theme of the Kolleg, ‘Legal development without a monopoly on power. Thoughts on standardisation patterns’. Organised by the directors of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, Nora Markard and Ulrike Ludwig, the event will ask whether whether specific, non-dominating forms of unification can be observed in the respective legal orders.

The workshop ‘Accommodating the Other of Employment’ by Eva Kocher, taking place on 19 June 2026, will focus on private care work in the context of labour law and discuss the potential of individual accommodation rights to promote structural and sustainable change in the workplace.
