Doctoral Researchers

Mathematics Münster offers an outstanding research profile and – as part of the Mathematics Münster Graduate School – excellent scientific training for doctoral researchers in mathematical fields to strengthen their competences for future career success. Professorial supervision ensures steady and focused development of the doctoral researcher's professional expertise and personal goals. The mentoring system encourages a transparent and open progress review. In addition, a range of seminars, lectures and events are offered to broaden the horizon regarding neighbouring mathematical fields.

Mathematics Münster Graduate School (MMGS)

The MMGS is open to graduates pursuing a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Münster and offers excellent research and teaching in numerous mathematical fields.

MMGS researchers profit from the amenities of Mathematics Münster, such as receiving funding for conference travel or summer schools, gaining opportunities to co-organise scientific events and participating in numerous networking opportunities and events.

The MMGS, founded in June 2019, is a joint graduate programme of the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster and the mathematical institutes of the University of Münster.

Dive into your own research and establish your scientific network

  • Join MM on one of our open‑topic and project-based research positions.
  • Bridge the gaps by collaborating with more than one research group.
  • Organise conferences with the funding of the Young Mathematician Conference Network.
  • Get travel funds to engage in international collaborations and attend conferences.
  • Go abroad for up to 6 months for short intensive research stays, for in-depth collaborations on projects and to strengthen the international research networks.

Present and communicate your research

Doctoral researchers are encouraged to present their research at seminars and colloquia as well as communicate their research in seminars and lectures to a student audience. Participation and organisation of conferences is supported through funding and institutional backing. They can also attend public disputations by other doctoral candidates.

Mentoring

In addition to their scientific supervisor, who provides support on all aspects of the dissertation, each doctoral researcher chooses a mentor who can provide additional guidance in the doctoral researcher’s academic and personal development. The mentoring shall ensure the transparency of the doctoral process (e.g. through regular progress review meetings together with the supervisor and mentor) and help to detect and solve potential difficulties and problems early on. In case of conflict situations, the mentor may offer support and act as a mediator.

Visiting Doctoral Researchers

Investigators and postdocs can invite excellent external doctoral researchers for 1-6 months to Mathematics Münster for a joint research project, for scouting promising postdocs or as part of dual supervision. Mathematics Münster funds allowances for rental costs and travel. Applications are to be submitted by host investigators through the internal portal.

Young African Mathematicians Fellowship Programme

The Young African Mathematicians Fellowship Programme enables outstanding graduates of the AIMS Master's Programme to spend an academic year at Mathematics Münster, immersing themselves in a rich and stimulating mathematical environment and working on their own research projects.

Exchange experiences and broaden the horizon

Beyond Maths are talks, seminars, and workshops on non-mathematical topics such as academic skills, career planning, equal opportunities and diversity, and knowledge transfer and science communication to complement the mathematical education and broaden the horizon.

Mathematics Münster is a hub for all researchers – united by their passion for mathematics.

We welcome people of all genders, cultural or religious backgrounds or world views, social backgrounds, mental or physical abilities, sexual orientations, ages, ethnicities, nationalities or other aspects of diversity. We aim to increase gender equity on all levels and support under-represented groups though or equity and diversity measues. 

Enhancing the compatibility of academic work and family life, providing structural and financial support that eases the career-family balance for researchers is one of the goals of Mathematics Münster and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Graduate Centre: The Münster Centre for Emerging Researchers (CERes) is the general offering of the University of Münster to support early-career researchers through training programmes such as good scientific practice.

Third-party funding expertise: The SAFIR research funding advisory service advises and supports doctoral researchers and postdocs in the acquisition and strategic use of third-party funding.

Higher education teaching: Offers of the Centre for Higher Education Teaching with course programmes and various advisory services, including competence enhancement for digital teaching-learning formats.
