Abstract (English)
Digitalisation has made cultural goods accessible on an unprecedented scale. However, the digital availability of cultural goods and the opportunity for cultural participation are not one and the same. For “access” denotes a relationship between cultural goods, those interested in them, and the institutions that determine their accessibility. This relationship is shaped by historical ownership structures as well as institutional claims to interpretation and control over digital infrastructures. Analysing these factors raises the normative question of which claims to access and which restrictions are justified, and for what reasons.
The interweaving of art-historical and curatorial perspectives with philosophical and ethical ones sharpens our understanding of this problem. The digital cataloguing of contested collections highlights how the expansion of public access comes into conflict with claims to protection and cultural self-determination. The examination of dispossessed cultural heritage illustrates why digital accessibility does not replace control over material assets and their restitution. In dealing with artificial intelligence, it becomes apparent how the opening up of collections simultaneously facilitates their commercial exploitation and suggests new restrictions on access. The ambivalence of access thus concerns both its denial and the consequences of granting it.
Conditions of access determine the perception and significance of cultural goods in equal measure. Their normative assessment therefore requires an examination of the respective contexts of the works, collections and traditions. Conversely, art-historical analysis gains in precision through the ethical distinction between existing possibilities of disposal and justified claims to access. In this context, curating proves to be an epistemic practice whose decisions regarding contextualisation and forms of visibility invariably touch upon questions of responsibility.
This reciprocal clarification has given rise to a research framework in which the historical and aesthetic distinctiveness of cultural goods is constitutive for the establishment of equitable conditions of access. Reflection on the differing disciplinary understandings of these concepts forms part of its methodological output. It sharpens the distinctions between availability and participation, ownership and access, as well as institutional control and legitimate decision-making power.
