Erasmus at Faculty 14 - Geosciences

Welcome! 🌍

We are delighted that you are interested in studying abroad at the University of Münster. The Erasmus Office is your first point of contact at the Department of Geosciences for any inquiries regarding the Erasmus+ program.

Please contact us either by  email (erasmus.geo@uni-muenster.de), by phone (+49251 83 33988), or in person during our office hours (appointments can be booked via our  Learnweb course).

Information about the Faculty of Geosciences

The Department of Geosciences offers various bachelor's and master's degree programs. These are:

Information about the content of the various degree programs can be found on the linked websites. Regardless of which degree program you come to Münster for, you will have access to all courses offered by the department!

You can find the courses for the current and previous semesters in the course catalog. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that all courses (especially seminars) will be offered in future semesters. If you have any questions about specific courses, please feel free to contact us.

Most of the department's courses, especially in the bachelor's programs, are held in German (there are exceptions in geoinformatics). Some English courses are also offered in the master's programs. The Institute of Geoinformatics offers two master's degrees that are taught entirely in English. However, these require prior knowledge of computer science or geoinformatics. You can check with the respective lecturer to see whether your prior knowledge is sufficient.

In addition, it is also possible to attend courses in other departments. A list of the other departments can be found here. Some other institutes offer courses in English, e.g., the Institute for Political Science. Courses can also be found here via the course catalog

Application process

First, you apply for an Erasmus place at the University of Münster at your home university. If you are accepted, your home university will nominate you to the International Office at the University of Münster. Once your nomination has been confirmed, you will receive information about the further organization of your semester abroad.

Before traveling to Münster, you should consider which courses you would like to take at the University of Münster. These can be found using the course catalog (a few years ago, the Erasmus office created instructions on how to use the course catalog correctly, which you can find here). Unfortunately, courses for future semesters are only entered shortly before the start of the semester. However, courses from previous semesters can serve as a guide, as many courses are generally offered once a year.

The courses you have selected for your semester at the University of Münster are then entered into the Learning Agreement. This must be signed by you and by the responsible persons at both partner universities. Usually, this is now done online (Online Learning Agreement).

First steps at the Faculty of Geosciences

Shortly before the start of the semester, the Erasmus office organizes a welcome meeting for the exchange students who will be studying at the Department of Geosciences. The meeting serves as an opportunity to get to know the institutes, the buildings, and the other Erasmus students.

Once the semester begins, you should attend the courses you wish to take. After the first session, you should go to the lecturer and inform them that you are participating in the course as an Erasmus incoming student. It may also be possible to arrange an alternative form of examination, so that instead of a written exam, you can take an oral exam or write a paper, for example.

If there are any changes to the courses you wish to attend compared to your Learning Agreement, you must enter these changes in another table in the document, have it signed again by both universities, and inform the Erasmus office.

Transcipt of Records

When your Erasmus program is coming to an end and you have successfully completed all your exams and coursework, you must contact your lecturers and have them fill out and sign a certificate (which you can find here). Once you have collected the certificates for all your courses, bring them to the Erasmus office and we will issue your transcript of records.

Due to the difficulty of the German language, ECTS credits for courses taught in German are multiplied by a factor of 1.5.

Language courses

The Language Center (Sprachenzentrum) at the University of Münster offers German courses at various language levels. Two-week intensive courses take place before the start of the semester. You must register for these courses online directly with the Language Center. Before the course begins, you must also take a C-test to determine your language level. All information can be found online, but there is also an information event during Welcome Week at the University of Münster. German courses are also offered during the semester, for which you can also register via the Language Center. Incoming students are also welcome to learn other languages at the Language Center.

Additional support

International Office

The International Office is responsible for enrollment at the University of Münster as well as student ID cards and semester tickets, which allow you to use public transportation and regional transport throughout Germany without an additional ticket. It is also responsible for questions regarding accommodation, insurance, etc.

Erasmus Association

The Erasmus Association is an organization run by students at the University of Münster that accompanies and supports Erasmus incoming students during their stay in Münster. At the beginning of each semester, the Erasmus Association Münster organizes a Welcome Week and a buddy program. Your buddy will be a local student at the university.

The association also offers consultation hours, the times of which can be found here. In addition, there is a regulars' table every Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. at the Gazelle, which is a great opportunity to meet new people. The association also offers various events, parties, and short trips. You can find the current offerings on the Instagram page.
