Access to Internal Services via the University WLAN Only Possible with VPN

Access from the university WLAN (“uni-ms” and “eduroam”) to internal services of the university and departments will be additionally secured via VPN from October 1, 2025, in order to better protect the university network.

Internal services are all university services that you can only access from home or public networks with a VPN connection. You will soon need a VPN connection for these services even when using the university WLAN. Public services such as Exchange or the university websites, on the other hand, can be accessed without a VPN connection (also in the future).

The following services are affected by the change:

  • Network drives
  • Remote desktop
  • Uni Cloud
  • HPC

Other services may be affected indirectly , as the regulation also applies to background services (e.g., DFS).

What does this mean for me?

  • You use internal services on the university WLAN (e.g., via your laptop): From October 1, you will also need a VPN connection to use these services on the university WLAN — the procedure will therefore soon be the same as for your home WLAN.
  • You use internal services via a wired LAN connection (e.g., via your work PC): You will not need a VPN connection even after October 1.

Contact for questions and problems

If you unexpectedly lose access to a service after October 1, first check whether a VPN connection helps. If this is not the case, please contact it@uni-muenster.de. You can also use this email address to contact us if you have any questions.
