Secure Web Gateway (SWG) - Linux

Note: This page is currently under construction

To set up the Secure Web Gateway (SWG) correctly, it is important that both parts of the instructions (installing the certificate and setting up the SWG proxy) are carried out.

  • Install certificate

    Download and install certificate

    The commands

    sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates
    sudo wget https://www.uni-muenster.de/imperia/md/content/ziv/anleitungen/universitaet_muenster_secure_web_gateway.crt -P /usr/local/share/ca-certificates/
    sudo update-ca-certificates

    The root-Certificate for Debian-/Ubuntu-based systems will be downloaded to the correct location and the Certificate-store will be updated.

  • Set up SWG proxy

    1. Open Firefox settings

    The certificate has to be imported into Firefox. To do that open the settings by pressing on the three lines in the upper right corner and go to settings.

    2. Import certificate

    To import the certificate, you must go to “View certificates” in the settings and then click on “Authorities.” Then click on “Import” and select the previously saved certificate.

    3. Choose proxy in network settings

    Open the Settings and go to Network and klick on Proxy.

    4. Choose storage location (2)

    Select the Settings as shown in the screenshot. Plese use the Poxy-Auto-Configuration. And then klick on save.

    5.Done

    The instructions are now complete. Please note that the proxy does not work outside the university. Theoretically, you can also use the proxy on private computers. However, please note that you only activate the proxy when you are connected to the VPN.
