Outreach Event: Theatre improvisation workshop at the Friedensschule on 21 February

On February 21, our church historian Dr. Giulia Marotta offered a theatre improvisation workshop entitled "Communicating or Excommunicating: This is the question" at the Friedensschule here in Münster. A group of high school students of the Friedensschule got the opportunity to get an interactive insight into Dr. Marotta's WiRe research project during their history lesson.

The workshop started with an impulse lecture on "Modernity and Excommunication" and a warming-up with a couple of drama icebreaker games. The latter served to build trust within the group and to stimulate participants' imagination. Everyone had a lot of fun, of course! After the preparation, each student was given the name and role of a historical person for the theatre improvisation. After everyone had become familiar with their role, the group staged a heated debate set in the Roman Curia at the beginning of the 20th century to discuss the excommunication of modernist intellectuals.

Through the improvisation workshop, which combined scientific content with artistic interpretation techniques, the students were able to immerse themselves in Dr. Marotta's research project in an innovative way. By reproducing and exploring past events through the theatre improvisation, the students not only had a lot of fun - as you can see in the pictures. Rather, they also experienced a new way to learn and remember information.

Workshop "Applying for Jobs in Academia" on 7 February

How do I present my research project and myself successfully in job interviews?

Some of our WiRe Fellows have asked themselves this question - and have now jointly developed answers to it in the workshop "Applying for Jobs in Academia". The workshop was led by Heidi Störr, an experienced job coach. Over coffee and snacks, our Fellows were able to gain insights into the German work culture. Next, there were exercises and insider information on how to master interview situations. The afternoon was rounded off with a short reflection on the scope for salary negotiations in the academic world.

Network breakfast and award of further WiRe-Fellows on 6 December

On 6 December we organised the first network breakfast for international and German female postdocs at the University of Münster. We were very pleased to be able to award WiRe Fellowshops to three more excellent young female researchers in this context: Prof. Dr. Bertold Tillmann, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the WWU Foundation, presented the certificates. The additional nomination was made possible by a generous funding from the University of Münster Foundation.

Following a welcoming address by our Vice Rector for Career Development, Prof. Dr. Maike Tietjens, the presentation of the certificates and a short information input by the coordinator of our Welcome Centre for Internationally Mobile Researchers, Maria Homeyer, the researchers had the opportunity to exchange ideas over sandwiches and coffee. The poster exhibition of our WiRe-Fellows on their research projects also provided an opportunity for stimulating discussions.

We are very pleased that the opportunity for networking was actively seized.

Monthly Academics Special: Women in Academia on 5 October 2018

On 5 October, our recently nominated WiRe fellows Dr. Angélique Lamaze (France), Dr. Anna Stejskalova (Czech Republic) and Dr. Chiara Ferrario (Italy) were honoured at the Monthly Academics special: "Women in Academia" organised by the Welcome Centre of the University of Münster and the WiRe team. Dr. Patricia Göbel, Equal Opportunity Officer of University of Münster, presented the certificates at a ceremony. Dr. Stejskalova was unfortunately unable to attend the event.

Neurobiologist Dr. Lamaze has been researching the sleep-wake rhythm of Drosophila flies in Prof. Stanevsky's research group since the beginning of September. Bioengineer Dr. Stejskalova also started her research on endometriosis in Prof. Götte's research group in September. As the first WiRe-funded researcher from the field of humanities, the philosopher Dr. Ferrario has been dealing with the concept of function in evolutionary contexts at the chair of Prof Krohs since October.

The Monthly Academics special "Women in Academia" was dedicated to the promotion and recognition of women in science. Thus, Mayor Wendela-Beate Vilhjalmssonder and Prof. Dr. Quante, Vice Rector for Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Knowledge Transfer, emphasized in their greetings the special challenges that young female scientists have to master on their scientific career path.

In addition to our WiRe-Fellows, Prof. Dr. Lifeng Chi (China) and Prof. Dr. Corinne Bonnet (France) were also honored as WWU Ambassadors. WWU Ambassadors are international scientists with a strong research background who have maintained close ties to the University of Münster.

Witty entertainment was provided by two science slammers. The evening was rounded off with a snack and the opportunity to network.
