    Introducing Interactional Linguistics (05LE10S-1811033)

Course * Specialization Phase * Wed 12–14 p.m. * HS 3305 (Kollegiengebäude III) (University of Freiburg)

To get by in the small and big practicalities of everyday life, we recurrently use interactional practices. We do this using a rich repository of linguistic forms and bodily resources. Which linguistic structures enable for organizing social interaction and simultaneously are constituted by? What do participants by using specific linguistic forms? Or: Which resources serve the accomplishment of certain actions? The course offers some answers to these questions: Firstly, basic concepts and methods of Interactional Linguistics (Selting & Couper-Kuhlen 2001) are introduced and data of authentic social interaction are collected. Secondly, students are guided to empirical work with this data.

Syntactic and Morphological Dynamics in Contemporary German (090100)

    Course * Extension module language * Thu 14–16 * Room VSH 116

The course deals with syntactic and morphological phenomena we find in contemporary German (discourse markers, progressive am-constructions, left- and right-dislocations, weil with V2-positioning etc.).  The goals of the first part of the course are (i) the expansion of basic syntactic and morphological knowledge that enables for analyzing linguistic structures of everyday spoken German and (ii) the recording and transcription of authentic everyday talk. In the second part, the students will work with the collected data and shed light on selected syntacitic and morphological phenomena of spoken German.

    Summer semester 2017

    Introducing Conversation Analysis (098070)

    Course * Specialization Phase * Tue 10–12 * Room VSH 18

What do conversationalists do when they talk to each other? In which way do participants recurrently use distinct linguistic forms to fulfill specific actions in social interaction? Or, in other words: What do conversationalists do by using specifc linguistic items? The course gives an overview of basic concepts and methods of Conversation Analysis. The participants will collect data of authentic conversations. The data provides the base for the further empirical analysis of organizational structures of talk-in-interaction like sequencing, turn-taking, repair, preference, narratives etc.

Syntactic and Morphological Tendencies in Contemporary German 098043)

    Course * Extension Module * Mon 10–12 * Room VSH 05

Forms of contemporary German like the tun-periphrasis, progressive am-constructions, inflectives, left- and right-dislocations, weil with verb-second position are objects of societal controversies. The course focuses on the functional description of such syntactic and morphological phenomena. The course has three goals: First, basic knowledge about syntactic and morphological analysis of contemporary everday German is extended. Second, participants are guided to collect data of authentic social interactions. Third, the course enables for the empirical analysis of selected syntactic and morphological phenomena on the base of the recorded data.

Youth Slang and Ethnic Styles in Contemporary German (098021)

    Course * Specialization Phase * Thu 08-10 * Room VSH 116

The course seeks for the motivations why specific linguistic forms of contemporary German are socially registered and why they are so important for the (re)construction of social identities and alterities. Basically, the course provides an overview of the sociolinguistic and anthropological state fo the art of the research on youth slang and ethnic styles (e.g., so-called „Türkendeutsch“ and „Kiezdeutsch“). Furthermore, data of youth slang and ethnic styles in authentic social interaction is collected. Subsequently, the course enables to analyze structures, communicative functions and social meanings of recurrently occuring linguistic forms that are co-constitutive for youth slang and ethnic styles.

    Course * Extension module language * Mon 4–6 p.m. * Room VSH 05

The course deals with the analysis of syntactic tendencies in contemporary German (progressive am constructions, inflectives, dislocations, weil with V2-positioning etc.). Goal of the first part of the course is (i) the expansion of basic knowledge that enables for analyzing syntactic structures of
everyday German and (ii) the recording and transcription of authentic talk-in-interaction. In the second part, the students work with the collected data and shed light on selected phenomena of spoken German.
