Training as a fire safety assistant

Target group: Employees of the University of Münster who perform the role of fire safety assistant in a building

After a theoretical introduction to the topic of “fire safety” at the University of Münster, including the tasks of fire safety assistants (BSH), participants will learn how to use a fire extinguisher and practice doing so. The aim of the course is to provide you with the general skills you need in your role as a BSH. You will learn how to act calmly in fire situations and how to deal with potential fires more safely without endangering yourself. In addition, after the training, you will receive a briefing on the building in which you have been assigned as a BSH. After that, you will be officially a BSH.

Overview of content:

Theory:

  • Fire science
  • Firefighting science
  • Small fire extinguishers
  • Marking of escape and rescue routes, first aid and fire safety signs
  • Escape and rescue route plan, emergency and alarm plan, fire safety regulations parts A and B
  • Behavior in the event of a fire
  • Tasks of fire safety assistants

Practical:

  • Practical extinguishing exercises/extinguishing tactics on the fire trainer (water and CO2 fire extinguishers)
  • Simulation of various types of fires, e.g., surface fires, grease fires (explosions), etc.
  • Explosion of a spray can
  • “Extinguishing” a propane gas cylinder

Note on on-site BSH training:
Initial BSH training, which usually takes place after all BSHs for the building have been trained, is carried out by the Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection Department. New BSHs are trained on site by a trained and qualified BSH from the building.
During the briefing, you will receive your BSH vest and further information about the area assigned to you.

Note on the validity of the training:
DGUV Information 205-023 recommends refresher training every 3-5 years. Therefore, BSHs should repeat the course after 5 years at the latest.

Methods: Trainer input, practical training

Speaker: Monasteria, Mr. Mühlenkamp (accompanied by Christoph Kämmerling, Jennifer Käsekamp, Marc Greshake, and Sven Overmann, Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection Department)

You can choose between a course in German and one in English.
