Application requirements

To gain admission to the Master of Education programme, you must meet the following requirements by the application deadline (WS 15 July / SS 15 Jan.):

  • you have earned at least 120 credit points
  • you have completed a qualification and career-orientation work placement, as well as an occupational field work placement
  • you have attained A2-level proficiency in two foreign languages (or one foreign language when applying for a Master of Education Berufskolleg with one professionally qualifying subject)
  • self-assessment
  • confirmation of additional foreign language skills [de] for applicants of the Master of Education Gymnasium/Gesamtschule programmes
  • for transfer students: equivalence certificates, if applicable (see below)

Application process

There are three steps in applying for first-semester enrolment:

  • 1. Apply via the Application Portal

You begin by applying for all restricted and non-restricted degree programmes for first-semester enrolment via the Application Portal. In this step, you will be asked to enter your preliminary average grade for each subject of study, as well as the number of credits you have earned for each subject (totalling at least 120 credits). If you do not yet know your preliminary grades, you can simply enter "4,0" into the mask and we will revise these after you have uploaded the respective certificates.

After submitting your online application, you will receive email confirmation that the WWU has received your application along with an attached check sheet (Kontrollblatt). On the check sheet, you will find your application number, with which you can log in to the Info portal. If you are applying under special circumstances (e.g. hardship case, second degree course etc.), you have to upload the additional required documents in the Info portal.

  • 2. Upload your documents via the Infoportal

You should then log in to the Infoportal. Here you can upload all your documents. The following applies for each upload:

    • Your documents do not need do be authenticated, a scan/photo of the original document (in PDF format) is acceptable.
    • No file should exceed 2 MB per upload field if you only upload what is required.
    • Your name/student ID number must be included in each uploaded file name (e.g. for individual pages of your transcript of records (ToR)).
    • Your documents must be accessible and legible. Please open them yourself and verify their legibility before uploading them.

You will be asked to upload the following documents:

    • bachelor's certificate, degree certificate or transcript of records (ToR) listing your average grade in each subject of study
It is important that the certificate clearly indicates your (preliminary) average grade for each subject of study, as well as the total number of credits earned. For WWU students, we normally require a provisional certificate issued by the respective Examinations Office because the ToR issued by the University of Münster seldom contains information on preliminary average grades. The bachelor's certificate must be submitted before the enrolment deadline, i.e. 15 November (WS) and 15 May (SS).
If the (preliminary) average grade of a subject of study is not stated on your uploaded ToR/certificate you will participate in the admissions procedure with the grade 4,1. Please be aware of the admission limits for the Master of Education.
    • confirmation that you have completed a career orientation work placement lasting at least one month, or alternatively, a qualification and career-orientation work placement lasting at least five weeks (25 days)
The work placement should have been completed by the time of application, but doesn't necessarily have to be officially recorded. Therefore, please upload the work placement certificate issued by the school, or the corresponding page of the ToR confirming that you have successfully completed the work placement (indicated by "BE", bestanden).
    • confirmation that you have completed an extracurricular/school-oriented occupational field work placement lasting at least four weeks
Again, the work placement should have been completed even if it has not yet been officially recorded. Therefore, please upload the work placement certificate issued by the respective institution, or the corresponding page of the ToR confirming that you have successfully completed the work placement (indicated by "BE", bestanden).
    • confirmation of language knowledge in two foreign languages, or if applying for a Master of Education Berufskolleg with one professionally qualifying subject, confirmation of language knowledge in one foreign language
You must confirm that you have achieved an A2-level of proficiency in the foreign language(s). This information can normally be found in the Abitur certificate under section IV "Fremdsprachen" (Foreign Languages). Uploading a digital copy of this page would be sufficient.
    • self-assessment certificate
After completing the self-assessment, you can request a certificate. Please sign the certificate (preferably in digital form) and upload it. Link for Assessment and further information
    • additional foreign language skills, if applicable
In certain subjects for MEd Gymnasium/Gesamtschule programmes, we require confirmation of additional foreign language skills [de].

  • 3. Review by the Student Admissions Office

We review your application as soon as you have uploaded all required documents. We will notify you via the Infoportal whether your application is complete and has been included in the admissions procedure, or whether any documents are incorrect or incomplete. In such cases, we normally reactivate the respective upload window so that you can upload your files again.

The deadline for resubmitting incorrect or incomplete documents is 20 July (WS) or 20 January (SS). Please note that the sooner you complete your uploads, the sooner we can review your application, providing you more time to correct any mistakes or replace any documents if necessary.

When your application is complete and included in the admissions procedure, you will receive notification around the end of July (WS) or end of January (SS) regarding whether you have been granted admission.
Information on admissions and the admissions procedure

If you gain admission and after you receive your bachelor's certificate, you must enrol in the Master of Education programme before the enrolment deadline (WS 15 November / SS 15 May).
    Information on enrolment

Please note that you are not required to upload all your documents directly after applying. You may upload any missing documents within the given legal period, i.e. no later than 20 July (WS) or 20 January (SS).

Higher-semester enrolment

The application procedure corresponds to that of first-semester enrolment.

The only difference is that you also have to upload a semester certificate. Only students who wish to change majors (lateral entrants) and students seeking higher-semester placement also need to upload a placement certificate for each subject of study. You can request a placement certificate from the respective degree course advisor [de].

Transfer students

Are you transferring from a different university, or have you switched to a different degree programme? If you wish to apply to a teaching degree programme in NRW, there are various state-mandated teaching provisions (Lehramtzugangsverordnung, LZV) and WWU examination regulations which apply to applicants to bachelor's and master's degree teaching programmes. To meet the requirements put forth in the LZV, applicants are sometimes required to complete compensatory studies. Therefore, we recommend contacting the LZV office in advance for further instruction.

You may also be required to submit additional equivalence certificates with your application. For more information, contact the Student Admissions Office.
