Chemistry Lab Technician

Your job

You work at the heart of current science in the laboratories of an institute of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, in a team with specialists and students. You will take on the analysis and synthesis of substances and physical quantities and, after a training period, will independently handle a wide range of technical equipment.

Stations and contents of your training

After a two-week introductory and orientation phase, you will be gradually introduced to the analysis of substances and physical quantities. You will learn to clean, identify, and characterise these. Here, you can not only further develop your manual skills but also have the opportunity to work with a variety of highly modern analytical measuring instruments, such as the NMR. In addition to planning experimental procedures, you will also independently take over the setup of various apparatuses as well as the execution of preparative measures. During your three-year training, you will also have the opportunity to get to know further scientific areas (e.g. microbiology) of the University of Münster as part of overarching internships.

What you should bring

  • In addition to a good intermediate school leaving certificate, your grades in maths and German as well as in scientific subjects should indicate a recognisable interest in the training occupation.
  • Technical understanding and skill make it easier for you to work with a variety of analysis instruments.
  • Your well-developed social skills enrich daily communication and collaboration in a heterogeneous team, which can always rely on you due to your reliability and responsible behaviour.
  • Initiative and the willingness to work on new, complex problem situations help you to develop connections independently and to think "outside the box" sometimes.

Training facilities & theoretical education

The practical training to become a chemist takes place in the laboratories of an institute of the faculty of chemistry and pharmacy. Additionally, you have the opportunity to be deployed in one of the other training facilities for 4 to 6 weeks - this way you will also get to know related fields!

  • Institute of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry
  • Institute of Biochemistry
  • Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry
  • Institute of Organic Chemistry
  • Institute of Food Chemistry

The theoretical education takes place in three blocks of four to six weeks per year at the Hans-Böckler-Berufskolleg in Münster. To optimally combine theory and practice, you will additionally receive practice-based instruction once a week at the University of Münster.

Duration of training/possibility of shortening

The training to become a chemist takes three years. A shortening to two and a half years is possible for apprentices with an entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or particularly good performance during the training and at the vocational college.
