1) Why did you decide to come to Muenster for your research?

During my PhD research in Utrecht, I was once invited to give a talk at the Institute for Geoinformatics in Münster. I genuinely liked the people and the atmosphere. I decided that if I'd ever have the opportunity to work at this institute, I would. About two years later, when I was finishing my PhD, there was an open position for a junior professorship, so I decided to apply.

2) What is your research about (in simple terms)?

Geosimulation models are computational models that mimic interactions between the different components in a system, both natural and human. They simulate, for example, crowd behavior, land use change, ecosystem service dynamics, or traffic flows. Geosimulation models are used to better understand system behavior as well as to project the potential future development of the system, providing input for decision makers. Because decisions based on erroneous model projections can be costly and/or irreversible, models are required to be valid. Therefore, the overarching goal of my research is to better quantify the validity of geosimulation models.

3) Has the research environment in Muenster affected your work? Would you recommend coming to Muenster to a colleague?

I recommend in general to try out different research environments throughout an academic career. The differences between environments demonstrate the pros and cons of alternative approaches in research and teaching, and thereby broaden one's horizon.

4) What would you advise other international researchers to do during their stay in Münster? Is there anything you do particularly like about Muenster?

The city center of Münster is very pretty. And, contrary to in my country, the shops in Münster are open until 7 or 8 pm. I enjoy going for a walk in the city center after work, with or without shopping. This is very relaxing, because it is way less busy than Saturdays, but there are still enough people around to feel the city's vibe. And in winter, the lights and other Christmas decorations add to this experience. Another thing I appreciate a lot are the many vegetarian and vegan options in restaurants in Münster.
