The Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Doctoral Research Associate
Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in
(salary level TV-L E13, 100%)

The full-time, fixed-term position will start on 1 April 2023 and is limited to three years. The regular working hours are currently 39 hours 50 minutes a week.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to work on two projects in the “Spatio-temporal modelling Lab” led by Edzer Pebesma. The researcher will work on two projects. “Open Earth Monitor”, an EU-Horizon Europe funded project that aims at building an open-source cyberinfrastructure to accelerate the uptake of environmental information and help build user communities at European and global levels, and “interTwin”, an EU-funded project with the goal of co-designing and implementing the prototype of an interdisciplinary Digital Twin Engine, an open source platform based on open standards that offers the capability to integrate with application-specific Digital Twins.

The candidate should have a completed academic degree (a German Diplom, a master’s degree or equivalent) in geoinformatics or another related discipline.

Your tasks
Your tasks are to design, conduct and publish research in the projects described above, to develop the software needed to achieve the project aims, to collaborate with the project consortia, and to help with project reporting and administration tasks.

Our expectations
Our expectations include research experience on the application of machine learning strategies in the context of remote sensing, an interest in the assessment of prediction uncertainties, experience using and developing data science software (R and Python), a demonstrated ability to independently carry out scientific work, collaboratively develop research software, solve problems and publish results in scientific journals. Experience using openEO and developing openAPI-compliant APIs is a plus, otherwise the willingness to learn it is a requirement. The candidate is expected to actively contribute to the development of the openEO API, both in terms of design/architecture as well as the software ecosystem around it.
