Stellenausschreibung

45,000 students and 8,000 employees in teaching, research and administration, all working together to shape perspectives for the future – that is the University of Münster (WWU). Embedded in the vibrant atmosphere of Münster with its high standard of living, the University’s diverse research profile and attractive study programmes draw students and researchers throughout Germany and from around the world.

The Institute of Geophysics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill a position for a

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in (salary level TV-L E13, 100%)

for the DFG funded Project "LASSIE - Lower mAntle Structures with unusual SeismIc phasEs ". We are offering a fixed-term, full-time position for 2 years and 6 months from 1 March 2023 until 31 August 2025.

Your tasks:
The successful candidate will be required to investigate the lower Earth's mantle using seismic array methods and numerical modelling having incorporated mineral physics constraints into the models in order to understand their effect on seismic waves. The candidate will work closely with other group members in this project to detect and characterise seismic reflectors below the mantle transition zone, their connection to mantle mineralogy and mantle dynamics.

Our expectations:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in geophysics, specialising in seismology of the Earth’s mantle, completed before the position commences. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have a MSc in geophysics, a strong background in observational and theoretical seismology of the deep Earth, and strong expertise in seismic modelling of deep Earth structure. Extensive knowledge of numerical programming and the modelling of seismic wave propagation, the theory of elastic wave propagation, and the analysis of both usual and unusual seismic waves are also required. Furthermore, strong knowledge of mineral physics and the geodynamics of the Earth's mantle are essential. Furthermore, fluency (written and oral) in English and Chinese (Mandarin) are essential as the project is a collaboration with the University of Science and Technology in China. German language skills are not a prerequisite for the position but are desirable. We expect the candidate to be highly motivated with the ability to work independently, possess good teamwork and presentation skills (oral and written), and be willing to travel and work in China for a short period of time.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities.

Applications should include a short statement of the candidate’s research experience and interests, a CV including a list of publications, and relevant academic transcripts.
