Online film event: Julia Robinson and Hilbert's Tenth Problem

The biographical documentary Julia Robinson and Hilbert's Tenth Problem tells the story of an important American mathematician. Julia Robinson, a pioneer among American women in mathematics, rose to prominence in a field where often she was the only woman. Her work, and the exciting story of the path that led to the solution of Hilbert's tenth problem in 1970, produced an unusual friendship between Russian and American colleagues at the height of the cold war.

How to watch it: You can access the film via this download folder from 7 to 14 May 2021. During this period, you can watch the film free of charge at any time. In case of technical difficulties, please write an email to filmevent@uni-muenster.de.

In normal times, after a cinema evening we would talk about the film over a drink. Despite the pandemic, we would like to create the opportunity to do this digitally: We will meet on 11 May 2021 from 9 pm in a virtual room to exchange thoughts in a relaxed atmosphere. The access data will be published here.

Online film event: Picture a Scientist

Thanks to the official May12 initiative we can offer a free screening of the new film Picture a Scientist. The documentary chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

How to watch it: everybody who is interested must register by 6 May on the May12 webpage. You will receive a personal link for a free streaming. The link is valid from 12 to 14 May 2021.

About the International Women in Maths Day

The day is a great opportunity for the mathematical community around the world to celebrate women in mathematics and make their achievements more visible. The aim is to inspire people and promote an open, welcoming and inclusive working environment for all.

May 12th is the date of birth of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first and so far only female winner of the Fields Medal. She died from cancer in 2017 at the early age of 40. Her beautiful and astonishing results and her life and career are an inspiration for everyone, women and men, to pursue their dreams in science. Her birthday was chosen to celebrate Women in Mathematics in her memory.
