New Young Research Fellow: Agatha Atkarskaya

The Cluster welcomes Dr. Agatha Atkarskaya as a Young Research Fellow. She is a postdoc at the Einstein Institute of Mathematics, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and specialises in group and ring theory. She is one of the driving forces in the construction of infinite Burnside groups via small cancellation theory. During her stay at Münster from 1 April to 30 June 2023 she will collaborate with Prof. Dr. Dr. Katrin Tent.

In collaboration with Eliyahu Rips, Agatha Atkarskaya and Katrin Tent have completed a short and hopefully accessible proof for the infinity of Burnside groups of sufficiently large odd exponents, which can be generalised to arbitrary exponents. Now they want to use Agatha's time in Münster to complete the proof for even exponents and then construct finitely presented Burnside groups, a well-known and difficult open problem in group theory.
