Full Professorship in Mathematics, Bridging the Gaps Chair (W3 level)

This professorship has been established within the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Muenster and the framework of the German Excellence Strategy. We are seeking a mathematician with an exceptional international research profile whose work bridges different areas of mathematics through a focus on applied mathematics. The research should align with the objectives of our Cluster of Excellence and the Centre for Mathematics Münster. We particularly encourage applications from researchers working at the intersection of mathematical fields that are well-established in Münster, in particular, numerical analysis, PDEs, SPDEs, optimisation and calculus of variations, probability theory, functional analysis, and topology and geometry, or those whose expertise complements these existing local strengths. Research areas at these interfaces may include, but are not limited to, scientific machine learning and data analytics.

In addition to a fundamental role within the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster, the professorship will have a vital role within the applied mathematics institutes and their teaching programmes. With this chair, the department also plans to strengthen the decisive role of mathematics in the University of Münster’s new Centre for Data Science and Complexity and the newly established master’s degree programme in data science. A visible role in intra- and interdisciplinary cooperations and collaborations with existing and planned third-party funded projects and research centres is expected.

Prerequisites for the application are a doctoral degree in mathematics or a related field, an outstanding international research profile, and corresponding teaching experience. In addition, we expect academic achievements made as a Juniorprofessor (assistant professor), in a Habilitation (postdoctoral qualification), as a member of the academic staff of a university or non-university research institute, or in a research position in business, administration or other relevant field in Germany or abroad.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions.

We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.

Applications including a CV, list of publications, research plan, and teaching portfolio (including teaching evaluations, if available), should be submitted electronically, in a single PDF file, by 30 September 2026 to mathdek@uni-muenster.de.

For further information, please contact Prof Dr Mario Ohlberger.

With this chair the department plans to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Christopher Deninger. In addition to its vital role at the Mathematical Institute and its teaching program, the chair will play a fundamental role within the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster and the Collaborative Research Center 1442 Geometry: Deformations and Rigidity.

We are seeking a mathematician with an exceptional international research profile whose work bridges different areas of mathematics and aligns with the research objectives of our Cluster of Excellence. We particularly encourage applications from researchers working at the intersection of well-established mathematical fields in Münster, in particular, arithmetic, topology and geometry, or those whose expertise complements the existing local strengths. Research areas at these interfaces could include, but are not limited to, geometric representation theory and complex algebraic geometry.
