Communication Science Student Body

We are the Student Council at the Department of Communication in Münster. As students, we help organize student life at the institute, plan events, and represent the interests of Communication Studies students vis-à-vis the institute and the university.

A large part of our work involves organizing events and activities for students. These include, above all, the orientation week for first-semester students at the start of the winter semester, as well as regular events such as parties, summer festivals, pub quizzes, and clothing swaps. These events bring together students from different semesters, allowing them to interact in a relaxed atmosphere.

In addition to organizing events, we’re also your go-to people for questions about your studies. If you’re unsure about something, have questions about the program structure, or need help with specific issues, feel free to reach out to us. Our services are available to both current students and high school students interested in pursuing a degree. For longer or more complex questions or concerns, the best way to reach us is by email; for quick contact, you can also easily reach us via Instagram. There, you’ll also get a direct glimpse into our daily life, event reminders, and the latest updates.

Our work takes place not only at the student council meetings themselves, but also in various committees at the institute and the university. There, we bring student perspectives to decisions regarding academic studies and teaching and help shape the conditions for studying.

The following people are currently active in the student council: Thalia Berndt (Chair), Meike Lützenkirchen and Lea Bärens (Deputy Chairs), and Luis Jung (Treasurer). Luca Beckmann, Thalia Berndt, Luis Jung and Sienna Knoll serve on the Executive Board of the Department of Communication. Paula Veltrup and Antonia Epping sit on the Faculty Board. In addition to these formal roles, there are many other students who regularly contribute to the student union’s work and play an active part in shaping it.

If you’d like to get involved yourself or simply get a sense of what we do, you’re welcome to join us anytime. Our meetings (Mondays at 6:00 p.m.) are open to anyone interested, whether you just want to check it out or get involved right away.

FAQ – Everything You Need to Know About O-Woche

What and when is O-Woche?
Orientation Week takes place from October 5th to October 9th. It’s your best opportunity to get to know the university, the city of Münster, and most importantly, your fellow students. We’ve put together a fun mix of info sessions, rallies, and relaxed hangouts.

Do I need to register for courses or O-Woche in advance?
No! You don’t need to register beforehand - neither for O-Woche nor for any university courses. We will explain how course registration works step-by-step during O-Woche. IMPORTANT: Be sure to attend the introductory event on October 5th at 10:00 AM in the Schloss (Castle).

Do I have to participate in all events?
No, participation is not mandatory. You can take away as much as you like and flexibly decide what you’d like to join in on. You can also do this completely spontaneously throughout the week.

Where do I get all further information?
About two weeks before O-Woche starts, the IfK will send you an email (so make sure to check your mail – especially your official university email address, if you already have it – regularly!).

In that email, you will find the WhatsApp link to the official KoWi First-Year Community, which will be used for communication during the week and for you to connect with others.

Do I already need my student ID card?
No, you don’t need it for O-Woche yet. However, we recommend uploading a photo to the SelfService Portal as soon as possible so the university can send you your ID card promptly. You should have received your login details for the portal by mail after paying your semester fee.
