Transformational leadership

Leading with impact in postdoctoral positions
© CERes

Target group: postdoctoral researchers

Postdocs often take on leadership tasks long before they hold a formal title: supervising students, coordinating projects, shaping research directions and negotiating within complex institutions. This workshop looks at transformational leadership as “leadership through the person” and invites participants to examine what guides them, where they experience tensions, and how they want to lead in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. Transformational leadership in academia is positively related to job satisfaction, trust in the team, trust in the leader and the scientific performance of the team (Braun et al., 2013).
We will discuss what people need in teams, how to approach conflict conversations, and how to lead upwards and sideways in the academic system. Short inputs on team leadership and insights from neuroscience will provide a basis for reflecting on how leadership behaviour affects cooperation and performance. Participants will define personal development goals for their leadership in postdoctoral roles and translate them into a concrete action plan.

Objectives:

  • Clarify where and how you currently take on leadership tasks in your postdoctoral role, with or without a formal position.

  • Work with key aspects of transformational leadership, including leading through your person, handling tensions and conflict, and navigating complex institutional settings.

  • Draw on impulses from team leadership practice and neuroscience to better understand what people need in teams and how leadership behaviour shapes trust and collaboration.

  • Identify inner and outer areas in which you want to develop further as a leader and formulate a concrete action plan for your own leadership project.
