Project management advanced

Skills for postdoctoral project work
© CERes

Target group: postdoctoral researchers

Session: Leading projects
This session looks at the leadership side of project management in the postdoc phase: setting direction, coordinating team members and dealing with stakeholders. Short inputs and interactive exercises help participants review their current project roles and test concrete ways of leading, even without formal authority.

Session: Solving project management problems
Postdoctoral projects often face delays, parallel demands and limited resources. This session introduces straightforward problem-solving methods and tools to tackle typical project challenges. Using their own cases, participants practise turning complex problems into manageable steps.

Session 3: Using AI in project management
AI can support planning, communication and documentation in research projects. This session offers an overview of useful AI applications in project management, explores concrete examples from academic practice and discusses opportunities as well as limits of AI support in day-to-day project work.

Objectives: tba

Facilitator: Dr Daniel Friedrich

Diese Workshopreihe findet in englischer Sprache statt. // This workshop series will be held in English.

  • Fri, 26 Feb 2027, 9:00–12:00 / Session: Leading projects

This session focuses on the leadership aspects of project management in the postdoc phase: setting direction, aligning team members, and managing stakeholders in and beyond academia. Through short inputs and interactive exercises, participants reflect on their current project roles and practice concrete approaches to leading without extensive formal authority.

    Objectives:

    • Clarify your role and responsibilities as a project lead in postdoctoral settings
    • Strengthen skills in setting goals, structuring project work and communicating expectations
    • Learn practical approaches to leading team members and stakeholders within and outside your institution.

  • Fri, 26 Feb 2027, 13:00–15:00 / Session: Solving project management problems

Project work in the postdoc phase often involves unexpected obstacles: delays, parallel projects, conflicting priorities, limited resources etc. This session introduces structured problem-solving methods and simple tools for dealing with typical project challenges. Participants work with their own examples and practise turning problems into manageable tasks.

    Objectives:

    • Learn structured methods to analyse and address common project problems.
    • Practise tools for prioritising, re-planning and managing constraints in ongoing projects.
    • Reflect on how to maintain clarity and momentum when projects face setbacks.

    Facilitator: Dr Daniel Friedrich
    Venue: Zoom

  • Fri, 26 Feb 2027, 15:30–17:00 / Session: Using AI in project management

AI tools can support project planning, communication and documentation, but they also raise new questions about quality, reliability and data use. This session gives an overview of how AI can be meaningfully integrated into project management in research environments. Participants explore concrete use cases and discuss opportunities and limits of AI support in their own projects.

    Objectives:

    • Gain an overview of practical AI applications for planning, coordination and documentation in projects
    • Identify areas of your own project work where AI tools may add value or save time
