Managing doctorates as projects

Ready to learn how to turn a long, complex doctorate into manageable components? This interactive workshop equips you with essential project management skills tailored to the unique demands of doctoral research. On Day 1, you will explore the fundamentals of project management in the context of doctoral work, including traditional and agile project management techniques such as Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Gantt charts, and agile sprints. Day 2 focuses on time and task management techniques for day-to-day research work, including Critical Path Analysis (CPA), Eisenhower matrix, timeboxing, and the Pomodoro technique, as well as communication practices for engaging key stakeholders such as supervisors. Through practical examples, case studies, guided reflection, and quiet time for individual work, you will engage with a range of techniques and evaluate how these can be adapted to different stages and aspects of your doctoral research.
Objectives:
- Outline key characteristics, constraints, and phases of doctoral research projects
- Evaluate the applicability of traditional and agile project management techniques to different stages and aspects of doctoral work
- Identify good practices and propose solutions to common pitfalls in doctoral project management
- Develop a best-practice communication strategy for engaging doctoral supervisors
- Apply selected project management techniques and tools to participants’ own research projects
