Open Science Professional

Target group: doctoral and postdoctoral researchers

(with foundational knowledge and some hands-on experience who seek to implement Open Science practices in their research activities without diving too deep into technicalities)

Open Science Professional is a hands-on, digital workshop series that empowers researchers to integrate Open Science principles into their academic work – enhancing transparency, rigor, and overall research excellence. Each workshop tackles one particular grey area, combining essential knowledge with deep dives into key topics. How do I navigate different Open Science types – what’s allowed and what’s not? How can I ensure my research data is both legally and technically open? We address common challenges in Open Science through a cross-disciplinary lens, providing standard solutions to questions across different research disciplines. Join us to make your research more transparent, robust, impactful, and truly excellent!

Detailed workshop descriptions below.

Methods & requirements:

All sessions are online and interactive. To make the most of your experience, some sessions include brief pre-work, ensuring our time together is as productive and hands-on as possible. You will also receive resources to deepen your learning both during and after the workshops.

We expect all participants to come ready to think critically, contribute actively, challenge ideas, and collaborate with peers. To maximize your skill development and foster a strong learning community, you’ll register once for all three sessions – building connections and progressing together as a cohort.

Objectives:

Taken as a package, this workshop series provides an opportunity to...

  • Learn about the basic aspects of Open Access, how to find a publishing venue that meets your requirements, and what aspects and pitfalls to watch out for when publishing your research results

  • Learn how to manage research data, with a focus on open data aspects and qualitative data such as scientific surveys or videos

  • Learn to apply Open Science practices to accelerate your research

Diese Workshopreihe findet in englischer Sprache statt. // This workshop series will be held in English.

  • Thu, 15 Jan 2026, 09:00–12:00 / Open Access & Co.: Publishing like a pro

This workshop will cover key aspects of academic publishing, beginning with the question: “What is Open Access, and why and how should you do it?” We will discuss author identification, relevant legal aspects, and options for publishing your thesis and other research results. You will also learn about the publishing services offered by the University library and how to avoid predatory pitfalls. The presentation of the various topics will alternate with Q&A sessions.

Requirement: Participants will be asked to complete a short survey about their publication experience and interests in the workshop topic three weeks before the workshop, allowing  the facilitators to adjust the workshop topics to their specific needs.

Facilitators: Wibke Fellermann, Dr Viola Voß (University and State Library of Münster (ULB))
    Venue: Zoom

  • Thu, 22 Jan 2026, 09:00–12:00 / Support your research: From FAIR principles to qualitative data

The first part of the workshop will focus on key aspects of research data management, including the data lifecycle, the use of metadata, the FAIR principles, and the publication and preservation of research data. The second part will emphasise the handling of qualitative research data, such as scientific surveys or videos. In this section, we will address, for example, aspects of data anonymisation or the re-use of qualitative data. We will conclude with time for open discussion and a broad Q&A session.

Facilitators: Dr Frank Berkemeier, Adienne Karsten-Welker (University and State Library of Münster (ULB))
    Venue: Zoom

  • Thu, 29 Jan 2026, 09:00–12:00 / Excellent research is open research

Excellence in research means that there is a relatively fast progress in knowledge generation. Participants will learn about and apply Open Science practices across the research lifecycle that – if done correctly – accelerate progress: pre-specifying an analysis plan, writing reproducible code, and submitting preprints to PCIs.

Requirement: Participants will be required to complete a 12-minute survey about their experience with Open Science practices two weeks prior to the workshop. Completion of the survey will help align the workshop’s tasks with participants’ prior knowledge and is a prerequisite for attending the session.

Facilitator: Dr Lukas Röseler (Münster Center for Open Science (MüCOS))
    Venue: Zoom

The Open Science Professional is the result of a collaborative conception and delivery by: Dr Mitja Back (MüCOS), Dr Frank Berkemeier (ULB), Wibke Fellermann (ULB), Adienne Karsten-Welker (ULB), Dr Lukas Röseler (MüCOS), Dr Viola Voß (ULB), and Dr Iva Ognjanovic (initiative lead)
