Physics Lab Technician

Your job

As part of the team with our qualified specialists and the training staff, you will work at the *Institute of Physics* of the University of Münster. Here, you will be offered a wide range of varied tasks and training opportunities: you will support the setup of experiments, as well as the recording and evaluation of measurement data, and after a familiarisation phase, you will independently handle a wide range of state-of-the-art measuring and analysis equipment.

Stations and contents of your training

After a one-week introductory and orientation phase at the institute, you will learn basic manual skills in the precision engineering and electronics workshop, which are particularly relevant for your daily work. Subsequently, you will gradually be introduced to the determination of the properties of materials and systems through experiments or measurement series. Thus, you will not only set up experimental setups and carry out these using computer-controlled measuring devices, but also document and analyse the results obtained independently. You are very familiar with a wide range of scientifically highly modern devices such as lasers, electron microscopes or spectrometers and can always rely on a highly motivated team in your daily work.

During your three-and-a-half-year training, in addition to working in the various research groups, you will complete internships and gain insights into other disciplines. Take the opportunity and communicate openly about your personal areas of interest, so that you can benefit from individual support from your supervisory team.

What you should bring

  • In addition to a good intermediate school certificate, your grades in maths, physics, English, and in natural science and technical subjects should indicate a recognisable interest in the training occupation.
  • Technical understanding and analytical thinking skills will make it easier for you to work with complex research equipment and contribute to solving physical and mathematical problems.
  • Your open nature and team spirit, as well as reliability, enrich the daily communication and cooperation in an international team.
  • Your precision and conscientious work ethic are essential for eliminating hazards and achieving accurate measurement results.
  • The willingness to familiarise yourself with new problem situations will help you in your daily dealings with complex processes and support you in developing good solutions.

Training institution & theoretical training

The costs for the journeys to the vocational school are partially reimbursed according to the student travel cost regulations.

Duration of training/possibility of shortening

The training usually lasts 3 1/2 years. A shortening to 3 years is possible for trainees with particularly good performance during the training and at the vocational school.
