Tailored Physical Training for Female Rugby Players

In the summer semester of 2025, students of the Bachelor's program Human Movement in Sports and Exercise had the unique opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge directly to sports practice. As part of the seminar "Physical Training in Elite Sports – Tailored Physical Training for Female Rugby Players," they worked closely with the Rugby Tourists Münster, a women’s rugby sevens team with one clear goal: qualifying for the German Championships in August.

Throughout the seminar, the students acted as sports scientists, aiming to enhance the players' physical performance in strength, endurance, speed, and agility. They began with a needs analysis, drawing on scientific literature and sport-specific assessments. Based on their findings, they designed and implemented customized training programs over the course of seven weeks. The training sessions were conducted in small groups once a week, directly with the team. Students were responsible for planning, supervising, documenting, and evaluating each session. They also conducted performance diagnostics before and after the training phase, using tests such as the 30-15 endurance test, Countermovement Jump (CMJ), 20m sprint, and Change of Direction (COD) deficit. The collected data was then used to carry out individual statistical analyses for each player, followed by personalized feedback and recommendations.

For the students, this seminar provided an exceptionally valuable learning experience. It offered not only an in-depth look into elite sports training but also a rare, hands-on application of academic knowledge in practice. Their efforts paid off: the Rugby Tourists Münster successfully qualified for the German Championship, a success to which the students contributed significantly with their expertise and commitment.
