To define routes and mechanisms of leukocyte infiltration into the peritoneum during peritonitis a multiscale imaging approach will be employed to analyse the temporo-spatial dynamics of the extravasation of different myeloid populations across the high endothelial venule (HEV)-like versus conventional postcapillary venules of the omentum in response to different sterile or infectious stimuli (1, 2).

Combined with single cell RNA sequencing of omental vessels, this will identify marker molecules (3) for the development of non-invasive imaging strategies (4) for assessing acute peritoneal inflammation and, potentially, also for its manipulation.
