People associate many things with the University of Münster, but art is not necessarily one of them. Yet art can be found at numerous locations on campus and can tell us fascinating stories about our past and present.

If you are interested in art, culture and history and would like to get to know the University from a different perspective, join us on a tour of discovery. We offer a selection of art history tours around campus and through the university buildings.

Tour descriptions

Following are two examples of tours offered at the University of Münster:

The Schloss: Late Baroque residential palace and main building of the University

Münster’s Schloss dates back to the late Baroque period and is considered one of the masterpieces of the architect Johann Conrad Schlaun. Gutted by fire during World War II, the palace was completely rebuilt after 1945 as the main building of the University of Münster. Meanwhile, both the Baroque façade and the 1950s interior design are registered under historical landmark protection. In this tour, we take you around the main building and introduce you to the history of the Schloss and the University.

Bike tour of the artworks on campus

“The city is our campus.” With this motto in mind, we invite you to discover works of art by bicycle. From Domplatz to the University Hospital to the new buildings at the Natural Science Centre – there are numerous artworks all over campus that are waiting to be discovered and discussed. The spectrum ranges from works dating back to Germany’s economic miracle of the 1950s to the latest pieces of contemporary art. On this tour you can literally bike your way through modern art history. Visit the Münster Marketing website [de] for a list of bike rental firms in Münster.
