Prof. Dr. Scott Kenworthy: "Patriarch Tikhon, the Orthodox Church, and the Bolshevik Revolution, 1917–1925"
Prof. Dr. Scott Kenworthy
In October 1917, the Council of the Russian Orthodox Church reinstated the office of the patriarchate, at the same moment as the Bolsheviks seized power. Tikhon (Bellavin), who was elected to fill that office, then had to confront the militantly anti-religious policies of the early Soviet government. He has often been interpreted as having condemned the Bolsheviks in the beginning, but after his arrest and release, as having compromised with them. Based upon meticulous use of all available evidence, this talk will present a more nuanced trajectory of the patriarch’s interactions with the revolutionary leaders that combined a consistent effort to defend the Church while also expressing a willingness to dialogue.
