Book contribution the 'Handbook of Human Multitasking'

In the new "Handbook of Human Multitasking" Claudia Voelcker-Rehage together with Bettina Wollesen and Hermann Müller, contributed with the chapter "Training based on Multitasking - With a Specific Focus on Motor-Cognitive Multitasking".
This chapter deals with multitasking training interventions to enhance performance under cognitive-motor multitasking conditions. These are situations where persons have to perform two or even more than two tasks simultaneously with at least one of the tasks involving a motor action with substantial requirements on movement control. Quite often, these motor actions are continuous movements with high demands on spatial accuracy requiring the integration of multiple sensory signals. The subchapter regarding theoretical approaches summarizes conceptualizations of relevant sub-processes for (cognitive-motor) multitasking and resulting requirements for the design of cognitive-motor training interventions. We suggest a set of general principles that should guide any planning and implementation of training interventions. Moreover, a structured overview on existing training studies on cognitive-motor dual tasking is provided. Studies are clustered based on typical training settings such as specific and general dual- or multitasking training and with respect to task-managing strategies. As a certain approach of multitasking training, computerized and virtual training regimes are described. Finally, practical implications and recommendations for future interventions are derived.
