The first full-time scholarship holders have finished their master’s studies
The first scholarship holders have made it: Anupam Datta, Zhuang Kang and Shervin Sorouri, who were supported by Mathematics Münster with a full-time scholarship during their master's studies, have finished their studies in Münster and received their certificates.
"We warmly congratulate Anupam, Shervin and Zhuang and wish them all the best for the future," said programme coordinator Prof. Dr. Martin Hils. The three students had started their studies in Münster in the winter semester 2021/22 - in the middle of the Corona pandemic. "In the four semesters, they were not only able to learn a lot and deepen their mathematical interests, but also - far away from their home countries - mastered many challenges and grew personally," added Dr. Bianca Santoro, mentor for international master's students at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The full-time scholarship was a secure support during this time. In addition, the three scholarship holders have had many valuable experiences in Münster over the past two years, as they report here themselves:
Statement Anupam Datta:
"I am grateful to the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster for offering me the Mathematics Münster Full Grant Scholarship for the entire duration of my studies here. My master's time in Münster has been really exciting; living all alone in a foreign country when a pandemic was raging the world was challenging, but I feel I have paved my way through it. I am grateful to all the professors under whom I have taken a lecture course or a seminar. Special thanks goes to Prof. Ebert and Prof. Weiss for sparking my interest in topology.
I will begin my PhD in Mathematics at the University of Bonn from Winter 23/24. Besides mathematics, I have devoted some time playing chess in Münster; I was an active member of SK32 Münster. I plan to take chess a little more seriously in the days to come, and hope to be a titled player someday."
Statement Shervin Sorouri:
"My overall experience in Münster was amazing, and I do not use that word lightly. I got to learn inner model theory from two of the leading experts in the field, I got to meet many set theorists and have mathematical conversations with them in the Münster inner model theory conference and other occasions. The Cluster partially funded me to visit Berkeley university for three weeks so I could meet Prof. John Steel, one of the prominent figures in inner model theory, and talk to them about set theory and possible future projects. And lastly, I made many good friends! Upon my arrival in Münster, the set theory group immediately included me in their circle and welcomed me as a member and we became quite close.
There were of course moments that didn't feel good with respect to the bureaucracy involved in the university's finance department, but in the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter. I'd say my experience in Münster could be characterized as one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunities and I'd like to think that I at least tried my best to seize it. As for the future, I got lucky enough to receive a Cluster Phd position in Münster and I will continue my studies under Prof. Schindler. I am quite excited and I know it will be amazing!"
Statement Zhuang Kang:
"Overall, my experience with the master's program at Münster University has been excellent. The substantial scholarship has made me financially secure, patient and helpful professors have assisted me in solving many academic problems, and enthusiastic classmates have helped me with various life issues. One aspect that impressed me the most is the small number of students in the master's courses. This allows personalized attention and support for each student. For example, I had one-on-one discussions with Prof. Wirth during every tutorial, ensuring that almost every question I had was answered.
In addition to learning, I have also made many friends within the mathematics department. When I first arrived in Münster, I lived in Mecklenbeck, which was 7 kilometers away from the university, so there were hardly any social activities. Attending classes was the only way for me to meet more friends. Over these two years, my friends from the mathematics department have provided me with a lot of help.
I am currently interested in manifold optimization and image analysis. After the fourth semester in Münster, I will move to Munich, where I will intern and work on my thesis. At the same time, I hope to apply for a PhD position to continue my research."
