Discontinuation of degree programmes

Students, faculty members and staff involved in teaching and studies work closely together to offer students attractive and successful degree programmes. The faculties are primarily responsible for developing the programmes and maintaining the respective quality standards.

To ensure that resources are allocated responsibly, the faculties analyse a variety of key figures for each  programme in their portfolio on a regular basis. This includes data on student demand and student success in each degree programme. The resulting analyses can lead to a decision by the faculty to discontinue a programme in order to make room for other innovative and attractive offers.

Offering attractive and successful degree programmes

The Rectorate of the University of Münster is responsible for monitoring the overall situation of its degree programmes on offer. To this end, it regularly reviews the functionality and performance of all degree programmes. If necessary, the Rectorate prompts the respective faculty to take steps to improve the functionality and performance of an individual degree programme. If these efforts fail to bring the desired results, this can also lead to the discontinuation of the programme.

Before a programme can be terminated, several practical questions need to be clarified to ensure a smooth and legally compliant transition for all parties involved. The Dean's office of the respective faculty takes the lead and works closely with their QM officer and the central administration. Together, they ensure that all necessary steps are taken. The concerns of the students are of central importance in this process.
