NRWege scholarships for refugees

Thanks to the programme "NRWege ins Studium" - which is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia - the International Office can provide scholarships to students with a refugee background.

Students can apply for the NRWege scholarship until 16 July (2024)

 

 

WHO can receive the scholarship?

Students with a refugee background who study at the University of Muenster and who fulfill the requirements for the successful completion of a study programme can apply for the NRWege scholarship. Language course participants and doctorate students are excluded from this programme.

Students can apply for the NRWege scholarship:

  • if their university entrance qualification was obtained outside Germany
  • if they do not receive social benefits/welfare
  • if they do not have a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis)
  • if they do not have German citizenship
  • if their entry to Germany was no longer than 5 years ago. There are exceptions to this rule. Please contact us if this rule applies to you/your situation.

Selection criteria:

  • Financial situation
  • Academic achievement(s)
  • Voluntary/social commitment

 

WHAT kinds of scholarships are there?

Full scholarship | max. 12 months | max. 934 € per month

Merit-based scholarship | max. 12 months | max. 300 € per month (can be combined with BAföG, an income or another scholarship)

What is the PROCEDURE?

  1. Please complete our online application form on Indico by 16 July (2024) and upload the required documents (the list can be found below)

  1. The selection commitee will review your application. Suitable candidates will be invited to digital interviews.
  2. You will be informed as soon as the selection committee has made its decisions. This will be done by the end of July.

 

What DOCUMENTS do you have to submit?

You must upload the following documents during the online application process:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Motivation letter
    • Why do you need financial support?
    • What made you choose your study programme?
    • Describe your academic biography/educational path so far
    • What are your plans after the completion of your studies?
    • Do you commit yourself socially, politically or ecologically?
  • Enrolment certificate
  • Copy of residence permit
  • Bank statements for the last three months of all your bank accounts
  • Proof that you have applied for BAföG
  • Payroll for the last three months (in case you have a part-time job)
  • Proof of social commitment or special achievements (if applicable)
  • Current Transcript of Records
    • if you apply for a merit-based scholarship and you are at least in the 2nd semester
    • if you apply for a follow-up scholarship (this means that you have received the NRWege scholarship in the past)
    • if you apply for the first time for a full scholarship and are at least in the 4th semester
  • Letter of recommendation from a professor regarding academic performance and prospects of academic success (only from the 4th semester or for a follow-up scholarship)
  • Final Declaration

 

What are the PECULARITIES in relation to BAfoeG, income or other Scholarschips?

If you are already a recipient of an income or another scholarship, this will be deducted from the monthly scholarship sum. If you receive BAFöG you can only apply for a merit-based scholarship.

If you receive funding from another source retroactively (e.g. BAföG or other scholarships), you must inform the respective source about the receipt of the NRWege scholarship and expect a reclaim.

 

Information on RESIDENCE STATUS

Students with a refugee background who fulfil the following criteria are eligible for funding:

  • A first decision by the BAMF has been made (exception §24)
  • Temporary protection has been granted
  • Protection has been granted for humanitarian reasons
  • An admission from another country has taken place
  • There is no enforcable obligation to leave the country
