New Pelargonium House Opens at Münster Botanical Garden

Plant sponsors and the Friends of the Botanical Garden fund new greenhouse space – collection open to the public for the first time

The University of Münster Botanical Garden has gained a new attraction: a Pelargonium House. At the sixth annual Plant Sponsors’ Day, the garden team expressed its particular thanks to the plant sponsors for their financial support. Together with the Friends of the Botanical Garden, they make an important contribution to the garden’s continued development. Organised by the Botanical Garden in cooperation with the University Advancement Office, the annual event attracts several hundred visitors each year.

The newly opened building is a greenhouse space constructed specifically for the extensive pelargonium collection. Until now, part of this colourful collection could not be displayed to the public. Many pelargoniums, which belong to the geranium family, are sensitive to rain and therefore require sheltered locations. Thanks to the new covered extension, visitors can now experience the collection in its entirety for the first time.

The Pelargonium House is connected by an automatic door to the Cape House, which showcases the flora of South Africa—the region from which most pelargonium species originate. Prior to Plant Sponsors’ Day, the garden team installed retractable screens, enabling the extension to also serve as winter accommodation for selected cool-greenhouse plants.

The Pelargonium House can be visited during the Botanical Garden’s opening hours. The garden is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. until 14 October. From 15 October to 14 March 2027, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can find more information about plant sponsorships here.

University Foundation Honors Citizen Science Projects

7,500 euros in prize money each for research on 18th-century ceremonial music and climate change

One project focuses on festival music, the other on climate change: The University Foundation has now awarded the Citizen Science Prize to two research projects. “Think along—get involved—research together” was the motto of the ceremony, at which representatives of the projects accepted the prizes, each worth 7,500 euros. The chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees, Dr. Mathias Kleuker, took the opportunity to invite the guests in the well-attended studio theater to join in the research. Both sides would contribute their own perspectives—and that is how new knowledge is created. “Citizen science is close to the foundation’s heart,” he emphasized. In his keynote address, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Michael Quante emphasized the importance of citizen science engagement for the university and society. “Data, facts, and sound reasoning are the only antidote we can offer against fact-free, loud rhetoric,” said the philosopher. Citizen science, he noted, is “not just a gimmick,” but indispensable to democracy.

University of Münster thanks 113 ProTalent sponsors

Around 300 cheerful guests, plenty of music with an extraordinary encore, and an interesting keynote speech: this year's scholarship ceremony at the University of Münster offered sponsors and scholarship recipients of the ProTalent scholarship program a varied program. The scholarship recipients' résumés not only showed excellent academic achievements, but also a remarkable level of social, community, and university involvement, emphasized Rector Prof. Dr. Johannes Wessels. “The diversity of your interests, experiences, and backgrounds is a great strength—for our university and for our society as a whole.” At the same time, he thanked the 113 sponsors. “With your commitment, you not only recognize the achievements and potential of the scholarship recipients, but also give them confidence, encouragement, and motivation for their future paths.”
