Listen, Read, Generate: US American Fiction in the Digital Attention Economy

In an increasingly competitive attention economy, literary fiction has been more and more concerned with finding a position within a media landscape shaped by digital platforms, algorithmic curation, and transforming reading practices. In her talk, Prof. Schober will discuss how two contemporary American novels, Ruth Ozeki's "The Book of Form and Emptiness" and Sara Etter's "Ripe," negotiate their cultural role by drawing explicit attention to practices of reading and its epistemological, social, and political values.
