Important note

  • From the winter semester 2025/26, the two-subject Bachelor's degree in Sociology will be offered to all first-year students in the form shown here. The new examination regulations have now been published in the official announcements and are legally binding.

Two-subject Bachelor of Sociology (2025)

  • Examination regulations

In the examination regulations you will find all subject-specific regulations for the two-subject Bachelor's degree in Sociology and the module descriptions. In the module descriptions, you can read the exact structure of the modules and see how many courses you have to complete in a module and what you have to achieve in which courses. The examination regulations are therefore an essential document for your studies and knowledge of the examination regulations is a prerequisite. All overarching questions about studying for the two-subject Bachelor's degree that are not subject-specific can be found in the framework regulations for Bachelor's examinations at the University of Münster within the two-subject model.

  • Examinations and coursework, QISPOS

The coursework and examinations you have to complete are set out in the respective module descriptions. Coursework can be graded, but the grades are not taken into account when calculating a module grade; examinations are graded in any case and form the basis of the module grades.
All coursework and examinations must be registered in the examination management software QISPOS; the deadlines for registration are announced here at the beginning of the semester. Registration for examinations is binding and can only be withdrawn within the registration period without giving reasons (information from the Examinations Office). Coursework can be deregistered at any time, but only by the Examinations Office I outside the registration deadlines.

  • Bachelor thesis in sociology

    General information

The Bachelor's thesis is an independently written piece of work in which you demonstrate that you can develop a relevant sociological or social science question, work on it using scientific methods within a specified period of time and present the results appropriately. The length of the thesis is approx. 10,000 to 12,000 words as a guideline; you will discuss this in more detail with your examiner when the topic is set.
The completion period begins on the date of the examiner's signature on the application form and is eight weeks; if the Bachelor's thesis is written during the course of study, the completion period can be extended to up to 12 weeks on request. The Bachelor's thesis is considered to be part of the course if one or more other modules have to be completed at the same time.

    Registration requirements

You can register for the Bachelor's thesis at any point during your studies, although it is strongly recommended that you only register for it from the 5th semester onwards.

    Application for the Bachelor thesis

The application for the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted to the Examination Office I (Bachelor). Please use the application form of the Examination Office. The application includes the topic of the Bachelor's thesis in German and English. The topic is provided by the examiner supervising the thesis (first assessor). The topic must be related to the content of one of the (elective) compulsory modules studied. You have the right to nominate both the examiner and the topic. The topic for the Bachelor's thesis is then assigned in writing by the Examinations Office at the student's request.

Dates and deadlines for registering the Bachelor's thesis

In general, there are no fixed dates or deadlines for registering your Bachelor's thesis; you can register your thesis at any time. However, you must note that a smooth transition to a Master's degree program is only possible if all your grades (including those of the Bachelor's thesis) are entered in QISPOS by a specific date set by the Examinations Office. Please refer to the information provided by the Examinations Office I.

    Submission of the Bachelor's thesis

The Bachelor's thesis must be submitted to the Examinations Office I (Bachelor) in two bound copies and in two digitized copies within the submission deadline. The Examinations Office will forward your thesis to the first and second assessors for review.
