Interdisciplinary conference “Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit. Hindernisse – Wege - Strategien”, 4th – 5th October, Münster

On Thursday, 4th and Friday, 5th October 2018, the Center for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research (ZIN) of the University of Münster and the catholic academy “Franz Hitze Haus” hold a scientific symposium titled “Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit. Hindernisse – Wege - Strategien” in Münster.

The conference focuses on the profound socio-economic transformation urgently needed to counter the fundamental threat posed by climate change and to safeguard the natural foundations of human life. Its aim is to analyze the factors that preclude the realization of the required change and to discuss possible courses of action in order to implement the transformation within the remaining time.

In order to facilitate a comprehensive discussion, the “Frant Hitze Haus” and the ZIN have invited numerous well-known speakers with various research interests, who will deal with different facets of a transformation to sustainability within four thematic blocks. Dr. Antoniette Di Giulio (University of Basel) will begin by speaking about ways to bring about sustainable consumption beyond small steps, followed by Prof. Ingolfur Blühdorn (University of Wien) who will focus on the a so-called “post-ecological defense consensus”. ZIN-spokeswomen Prof. Doris Fuchs and junior scholar Carolin Bohn will continue by evaluating opportunities and challenges of a “transformation through participation.” The last contribution by Prof. Jürgen Rinderspracher (University of Münster) will examine the topic “time as a critical factor” before the conference observers Prof. Marianne Heimbach-Steins (University of Münster) and Dr. Georg Stoll (MISEREOR) will summarize central results.

To ensure a multifaceted discussion, two co-speakers with expertise on the relevant topic will comment on each lecture mentioned above. Afterwards, the plenary will discuss each topic in detail.
