Target group: Postdoctoral researchers and advanced doctoral researchers

This event series offers early-career researchers practical knowledge on application and appointment procedures at German universities. Over the course of five interactive online sessions, you will receive clearly structured information, gain insights and learn from experts’ experiences, and receive suggestions for strategies to help you make informed decisions during the application process and prepare effectively for your performance in the appointment procedure. The concluding on-site workshop offers the opportunity to practise individual parts of the application process (e.g. a mock teaching session, or an interview with the appointment committee) and to receive structured (peer) feedback.

Objectives: Participants will be equipped to approach the appointment process well-informed and with confidence, to plan strategically, and to utilise informal knowledge for their next career step.

Deep Dive sessions in the winter term focus on specific types of professorships in German academia. They combine short informational inputs with a moderated Q&A featuring experienced researchers and experts.

Requirements: The online sessions can be booked individually as and when required. To get the most out of the workshop in the summer semester, it is recommended that you have attended at least two online sessions from the series.

    Deep dive: Junior professorship

    To what extent have junior professorships established themselves as a reliable qualification stage in academia? Under which conditions does it make sense for me to apply for a junior professorship? What should I bear in mind compared to a “classic” full university professorship when applying? And how can I achieve a positive interim evaluation?

    Objectives:

    • Gain an overview of the role of junior professorships as a qualification stage in academia and how they compare to full university professorships
    • Identify when a junior professorship is a suitable career step based on one’s own profile, goals and circumstances
    • Understand key factors for a successful application and learn what contributes to a positive interim evaluation

    Deep dive: UAS professorship

    What does everyday work as a professor at a university of applied sciences look like? Which indicators suggest that this could be a good career path for me? What specific requirements and framework conditions should I take into account compared to a university professorship?

    Objectives:

    • Develop a clear picture of everyday work and responsibilities as a professor at a university of applied sciences
    • Recognise indicators that a UAS professorship could be a good career path, given one’s interests, strengths and expectations
    • Learn about specific requirements, appointment procedures and framework conditions at UAS and how they differ from university professorships

If you would like to participate in this event and it is already marked as fully booked, you are welcome to join the waiting list. It often happens that registered participants cancel their attendance, which creates available spots. Free spots are allocated in the order of waiting list registrations. If spots become available within 72 hours before the event starts, we will notify several registrants simultaneously. These spots will then be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.
